Swarm Come Up Short(handed) to the Roughnecks
Saturday, January 27, 2007
Calgary, Alberta
Attendance: 11,462
The Minnesota Swarm were looking to regroup after the clobbering in Buffalo last weekend. They most definitely played much better but they fell to the Calgary Roughnecks in the end, 15-14 in front of 11,462 in Calgary. The dagger applied to the Swarm was in the form of four short-handed goals scored by the Roughnecks. The difference came in the last three minutes of the second quarter. The Swarm got a five minute power play with 3:06 left after a Kyle Goundrey high sticking penalty. However, the Swarm were unable to generate scoring chances or a hint of possession. Calgary took advantage of the Swarm’s foibles with shorthanded goals by Lewis Ratcliff and Tracey Kelusky, who are the Roughnecks two big scoring studs.
Both teams started the game exchanging goals throughout. After the first, the Roughnecks (3-1) had a 5-3 with the difference being two Jeff Moleski goals. The second quarter saw the Swarm (1-3) start to assert themselves with four straight goals at the start. Scott Stewart scored two goals, one a behind the backer past Roughneck starting goaltender Andrew Leyshon. After Stewart’s second goal which gave the Swarm a 7-5 lead , Leyshon is replaced by Ryan Avery, who was seeing his first action of the year. Scott Ranger came back quickly with two goals on Matt Disher to tie the game at seven. Swarm Head Coach Duane Jacobs replaced Disher with Nick Patterson at this point. Shortly thereafter, the aforementioned two shorthanded goals were scored by the Roughnecks to end the half up 9-7.
Spencer Martin started the third with a goal to bring the Swarm within one. The next eight minutes saw up and down action which eventually led to Kasey Beirnes tying the game at nine with 5:51 left in the third. Calgary regained the lead even as they had a goal disallowed and by the end of third, they were up 11-10.
The Roughnecks came out strong in the fourth quarter with four straight goals. By the halfway point of the quarter, the Roughnecks were up 15-10 and the Swarm were in a deep whole. Unlike the game last Saturday in Buffalo, the Swarm made a comeback. With Patterson being continually brought off for an extra attacker and Roughneck penalties, the Swarm began to chip away. Spencer Martin started the comeback with an assist from Kelly Hall to make it 15-11. Ryan Ward then started to find his range from long distance ringing up another goal by Avery. Then Ryan Cousins found a wide open Andrew Biers on a long outlet pass to bring the Swarm within two with 2:58 left. Ward again rocketed another goal past Avery and the Swarm were only down one with two minutes to go. Cousins almost tied it with around 50 seconds to go on a breakaway but Avery just brushed it away. The Swarm got the ball back with 17 seconds to go. They went on the offensive but the clock didn’t start to the disappointment of Roughneck faithful. The referees, after a long conference, decided to favor the Swarm by giving them ten seconds to play with. Ward was able to get a shot on net but the ensuing battle for the ball on crease came to naught and the Roughnecks won their third in a row.
The Swarm offense produced their best effort of the year with fourteen goals. Ward tied his own team record set on March 17th, 2006 in Portland with ten points on the night. Ward had four goals and six assists, both of which led the team. Kelly Hall continues to produce racking up two goals and five assists. Patterson saved 17 of 25 shots while getting the loss and Disher seven of fourteen. The five assists were a career high for Hall. Ranger scored three goals and an assist for the Roughnecks. Also, Ratcliff got a goal and five assists. Avery saved 27 of 34 shots in relief to get the win. The Swarm again lost the loose ball battle, 79-69 but they did outshoot the Necks 54 to 39 and won 18 of 34 face offs.
With the loss, the Swarm are in fifth place in the East Divsion at 1-3, two games behind the Chicago Shamrox (3-1) and Rochester Knighthawks (4-2).
