A Great Start to the Weekend

Friday, January 19, 2007
St. Paul, Minnesota
Attendance: 8,174

The Minnesota Swarm (1-1) started their two-game weekend in rousing fashion last night with an 11-10 win over the Rochester Knighthawks (2-2) at the Xcel Energy Center. In front of 8,174, the Swarm’s Dean Hill tied the game at 10 and Scott Stewart notched the game winner with 2:29 left in the game.

The Swarm got off to another fast start taking a 4-1 after the first quarter. Spencer Martin opened the scoring just seventeen seconds into the game to get things started. Swarm goaltender Nick Patterson was spectacular again and if not for passing gaffe that led to the Knighthawks only goal in the quarter, Patterson would have cemented a first quarter shutout.

The action in the second quarter intensified as the Michael Kilby of the Swarm and the Knighthawks Stephen Hoar tangled early. It reached a crescendo as the Swarm’s Eric Pacey rubbed out the Scott Ditzell of the Hawks near midfloor. Pacey received his second five minute major of the game and an immediate ejection after that altercation. The Swarm took a five goal lead after an Andrew Biers goal but the Evans brothers, Scott and Shawn scored one each at the end of the half to cut the Swarm lead to 7-4.

After Biers’ goal in the second quarter with 9:30 to go, the Swarm fell into another offensive funk as they struggled to get shots on net. Knighthawk goaltender, Pat O’Toole, recovered after a rough first half and shut out the Swarm in the third quarter. That gave the Knighthawks the chance to cut more into the Swarm lead as they finished the quarter down only 7-6.

After a Mike Accursi goal tied the game up to start the fourth quarter, the Swarm’s Kelly Hall broke the thirty one minute and fifty-four second scoring draught as the Swarm regained the lead at 8-7. The Swarm defense was excellent throughout the game often frustrating Knighthawk superstar, John Grant, but Grant finally got one past Patterson to tie the game at eight. Hill got the Swarm the lead again but Grant answered once again to tie it up again. The Knighthawks took their first lead shortly thereafter on a goal by Shawn Williams but Hill and Stewart answered with a minute and five seconds giving the Swarm their first ever victory at home in the month of January.

The Swarm were lead in scoring by Martin who scored one goal and assisted on four others. Hill got the Swarm’s first hat trick this season and added an assist in his first game of the year. Patterson saved 50 of 60 shots against a very potent Knighthawk offense. The defense, in front of Patterson, communicated well especially in the first half as they limited the damage the Knighthawks could inflict when they were often two men up.

The Swarm look for the weekend sweep in Buffalo tonight, as they take on the Bandits (1-2) at 6:30pm CST at the HSBC Arena. This will be the first game between these teams since last year’s first round playoff win by Buffalo, 11-10. This is a start of a season-long four game road trip. The Swarm are next at the Xcel Energy Center on Sunday, February 18th at 7:00 pm against the expansion New York Titans.
