Swarm Win at Home!!! Swarm Win at Home!!!

Saturday, January 22, 2011
St. Paul, Minnesota
Attendance: 7,042

The Minnesota Swarm returned home for game three of the 2011 season on Saturday night and for the first time since February 20, 2010, their fans went home seeing the hometown team win 9-8 over the Edmonton Rush on an Aaron Wilson gamewinner with 1:52 left. With the win, the Swarm now own first place in the West Division at 2-1 and have a two game winning streak.

Mat Giles started the festivities with two goals including his team leading third power play goal (along with Ryan Bneesch) of the year. The Rush came back to tie it but Callum Crawford answered on a 4 on 4 goal with three to go in the quarter.  A very hectic back and forth quarter for both teams.

The Swarm had a tough second quarter as they were shorthanded four times; however, they only gave up one power play goal to the Rush. Andrew Watt scored his fourth of the year on a beautiful outlet pass from Nick Patterson that he caught over his shoulder.  The Rush with a heavy edge in time in possesion got three goals in the quarter and outshot the Swarm 15 to 5. Halftime saw the Rush up 5-4.

Brodie Merrill openedd up the third with a goal to put the Rush up by two, their biggest lead of the game. Wilson counterrd with 8:59 to go with a power play on an assist from Crawford.

Merrill got his hat trick to extend the Rush lead to 7-5 to start the fourth. Hoevver, the tide was a changing and the Swarm began to overwhelm the Rush. Crawford sterted it with the Swarm's fourth power play goal of the night that was set up with a nice pick by Wilson to free up Crawofrod to the net. Ryan Benesch scored quickly scooping up the loosie on the following face off and shooting low past Matt Disher to tie the game. Tyler Hass got the Swarm the lead back with his first ever NLL and Swarm goal on transition at the 4:53 mark. It looked like the Swarm were to be jinxed again at home when Gavin Prout's shot went off Hass' stick and was redirected past Nick Patterson to tie the game. Not this time as Wilson got the gamw winner when Crawford found him with a behind the back pass that Wilson quick shot by Disher for the gamw winner. Patterson then cleaned up the remianing Rush rush including taking a shot in the facemask and fending off a last second shot to win it for the Swarm.

Benesch led the Swarm with five points (including one goal) and Wildon, Crawford and Giles each hsd two goals. Watt and Hass has the other goals. Patterson had another stellar night in net with 47 saves on 55 shots. Merrill led the Rush with three goals and two assists. The Swarm can win the season serios on March 25 in Edmonton.
