Patterson and the Swarm Win Home Opener With Panache

Friday, January 15, 2010
St. Paul, Minnesota
Attendance: 11,758

The Minnesota Swarm had a successful 2010 home debut at the Xcel Energy Center as they controlled the action and the Calgary Roughnecks throughout with the score on the board at the end of the game showing 12-10 in favor of the boys in blue. The win is the first this year for the Swarm as they even up their record at 1-1. The win against the Roughnecks also ties up the season series between the two teams with each winning at home with the tie breaker in Calgary on March 26.

Swarm rookie Zack Greer led the team in scoring with a goal and four assists. Tim Campeau got the game winning goal as he scored the first two goals of his Swarm career.  Nick Patterson saved 80% of his shots making 41 of 51 saves.  Callum Crawford and Jay Thorimbert scored their first Swarm goals in addition to Campeau.  The Swarm shutout the Roughnecks 3-0 in the third quarter, which is the first time the Swarm had ever shut out an opponent in a third quarter.

Tracey Kelusky had a hat trick for Calgary while Josh Sanderson had eight points on two goals and six assists.

Joshua Truax got the gist of the game down quite well. The Swarm give up the shorthanded goal to Kelusky to start the game and you may think, here we go again, but they tied it up in the next minute and from then on ruled the game.

The team was moving very well the whole night on both sides. Helping out on defense to limit Sanderson. Big hits by Cousins and Morgan throughout the night to rattle the Necks. Some nice transition goals by Sullivan, Watt and Thorimbert. The defense really worked hard in the fourth quarter killing of those five minute majors. The one on Greer sure looked like a dive by McBride but the team persevered.

One player who did well was Talbot, who had some issues before the game. He mentioned that his equipment bag was misplaced by the airlines and by the time he dressed, every piece of equipment was borrowed from another play. Even for his stick, he borrowed a head from one player and a shaft from another. After the game, he still didn't know where his bag was and who knows, it maybe lost forever.

The team only had one lull of no scoring from the last five of the second up to the last five of the third. Calgary rallied towards halftime but the defense came out strong in the third to kill the momentum.

The team struggled a bit with getting shots on net as only 38 of 62 were on goal but they got their goals at very opportune times throughout the game. Greer is improving each game and still has a lot of room to improve, but still got a goal and four assists. So I think shortly and after watching the Mammoth tonight, it may be next Friday, look for Greer to explode just like Buchanan did against Toronto last year.

What I like on offense is that all of the players are not afraid to put caution to the wind as they go to the net to make things happen. They don't try to waste much time outside just passing it around, they get right to quickly. With Buchanan tied up with work, it looks like Campeau is coming around pretty well which may leave Buck out of the line up for a while. I met Campeau after the game and he is quite a character and likes to dance. I don't want to jinx him but he maybe the newest favorite player of mine or at least definitely in the running.

I think the seven forwards you saw on Friday are who Lines will go with as much as possible going forward. Having Pollock back defnitely sparks things up and Crawford is working out well as he replaces Marohl.

Of course, the star of the show, was Patterson. I know some don't like his new haircut, but he worked out quite a bit in the offseason and he looks like the Patty of 2006 - 2008 and now even more wiser. Numerous big saves throughout the game, took away some breakaway chances and even a great outlet to Watt for his goal. I talked to Croswell after the game told him that if Patterson keeps this up, he may not get much playing time this year.

With travel issues, short turnaround and facing a team that beat them by five, just five days before, the Swarm performed quite well and the thing is, they have not peaked yet, the best is still to come.
