Rock-ed Early and Often

Friday, March 23 2007
St. Paul, Minnesota
Attendance: 8,184

After having won five of their last six, the Minnesota Swarm were as flat as soda after it losing its carbonation as they lost Friday night, 13-6, to the Toronto Rock in front of 8,184 at the Xcel Energy Center. Ryan Ward led the Swarm with four assists and Scott Stewart and Dean Hill scored two goals each, with Stewart getting also getting an assist.

The first quarter was a battle of defenses especially for the Rock as goaltender Bob Watson faced 19 shots and saved 18. Swarm starter Matt Disher saved 11 himself. The Rock got out to a 2-0 lead in the quarter before D. Hill scored the Swarm’s first goal with 10:46 to go in the quarter. That finished the scoring for the quarter and the Rock led 2-1 going into the second.

The second quarter doomed the Swarm as they had trouble getting shots on net and when they did, Watson continued to be stellar. That wasn’t an issue for the Rock however, as Josh Sanderson scored three of five straight Rock goals to start the quarter. After the Rock got up 5-1, Disher was pulled for Nick Patterson but the damage was done. It took a Chad Culp goal with a 1:20 left in the quarter before the Swarm finally stopped the Rock onslaught.

In the third quarter, the Swarm started to chip away at the Rock 7-2 halftime lead. Stewart and D. Hill got the Swarm within three before the Rock’s Ryan Benesch put the Rock up 8-4. Sean Pollock finished the scoring for the Swarm on the power play with 3:05 left to get the Swarm within three at 8-5.

That goal by Pollock was as close as the Swarm would get in this game. Mike Hominuck, who had scored 28 points in five games was out with an injury for the two middle quarters and by the time he got back into the game in the fourth, the Swarm were constantly pulling Patterson for the extra attacker to get back into the game. The extra attacker didn’t work well for the Swarm as the Rock forced quick turnovers which resulted in numerous breakaways to put the game away. The Rock extended their lead to 12-5 before Stewart was able to get the last goal of the game for the Swarm with 5:59 left in the game. Chris Driscoll finished the scoring for the Rock and the Rock finished the Swarm 13-6.

East Division W-L (Division Record) [vs. Swarm] (Goal Differential) As of 3-23-07

  1. Rochester Knighthawks 9-2 (6-1) [0-1] (+27)
  2. Buffalo Bandits 7-4 (7-2) [2-0] (+10)
  3. INNESOTA SWARM 6-5 (5-4) (-1)
  4. TORONTO ROCK 5-7 (4-4) [1-0] (0)
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  5. Philadelphia Wings 4-6 (2-4) [0-1] (-1)
  6. Chicago Shamrox 3-7 (2-6) [1-1] (-19)
  7. New York Titans 2-9 (2-7) [0-2] (-18)

The loss drops the Swarm to 6-5, which is still good for third in the East. They are a game behind the second place Buffalo Bandits but in order to get a first round home playoff game will need to finish with a better record than the Bandits because they have lost the head to head tiebreaker with them. The win for the Rock puts them at 5-7 and in the fourth and last spot in the playoffs at this time. Also with the win, the Rock ends a four game losing streak. With five games tonight and two tomorrow in the league, the standings should be jumbled slightly but the Swarm will still be in third after the weekend.

The six goals for the Swarm were a franchise low tying the six they scored on January 21, 2006 in a 12-6 home loss to the Rochester Knighthawks. It is also the first time this year the Swarm scored less than ten goals in a game. The Swarm out shot the Rock 53 to 47 but Watson made 47 saves while the duo of Disher (11 of 16) and Patterson (23 of 31) saved only 34. Both teams were tied in loose balls with 50 even though it appeared the Rock had a lot more. The Rock went 4 of 7 on the power play but the Swarm were stifled a man up going 1 of 6. The season ending injury to Mark Miyashita last Sunday against the Philadelphia Wings was detrimental for the Swarm as they went 10 of 24 on face offs. What was alarming is that Rock rookie Bryan Riddell, in only his second game, won 10 of 18 draws he was in on. Travis Hill took 23 of the 24 draws for the Swarm as he replaces Miyashita. Riley Kemp saw his 43 consecutive game streak end on Friday night. It was the first time in the Swarm’s three year history that Kemp didn’t play. The Rock were led by Josh Sanderson who scored five goals and an assist and Benesch who got four goals and an assist.
