Bandits Have Swarm’s Number Again

Sunday, March 4, 2007
St.Paul, Minnesota
Attendance: 7,504

The Minnesota Swarm’s four-game winning streak came to an end to their usual thorn in a side, the Buffalo Bandits, by a score of 16-15 in front of 7,504 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Swarm (5-4) to third place as the Bandits (6-4) take over second going into next Saturday’s All-Star Game in Portland. Second year player Dean Hill led the Swarm with a career high five goals and three assists and Sean Pollock added two goals and six assists. Buffalo was led once again by the league’s all-time leading scorer and Swarm killer, John Tavares, who had five goals and four assists.

The Bandits grabbed a quick 1-0 after a Tavares goal just twenty-nine seconds into the game but the Swarm surged out to their only lead, 2-1 after a Ryan Ward goal at the 5:04 mark of the first quarter. Tavares scored two more to give the Bandits a 3-2 lead which they never lost for the remainder of the afternoon. By the end of the quarter, the Bandits chased Swarm starting goaltender Nick Patterson from the game and held a 6-3 lead.

With Matt Disher in net for the Swarm, Buffalo continued their assault on the Minnesota defense extending their lead to 9-4. Hill led the Swarm comeback with three goals, two on the power play, in a 4-1 rally that cut into the Bandit lead. Buffalo added two more but Mike Hominuck scored with a second left in the half leaving the Swarm behind 12-9.

The third quarter saw the Swarm continue to chip away at the deficit that Buffalo put them at. Kasey Beirnes assisted on three of the four Swarm goals and by the end of the quarter, the Swarm got within one at 14-13 on a Ryan Cousins goal and the Bandits changed goaltenders from Steve Dietrich to Mike Thompson.

The back up goalies for both teams, Disher and Thompson, were the stars in the fourth quarter giving up only two goals each. The Bandits Kevin Dostie scored two goals in the first 5:09 of the quarter to extend the lead at 16-13. The Swarm continued to rally with goals from Beirnes and Stewart to bring it to 16-15. Disher prevented any more damaged but the Swarm couldn’t tie it up on Thompson and fell defeated at the end as the Bandits extend their winning streak to four.

The Swarm had a fantastic opportunity to give themselves a buffer in the playoff race heading into the All-Star break but with the loss to the Bandits, they lose the season series and the tiebreaker between the two teams which may be the difference between hosting a home playoff game or going on the road. The offense continues to function very well but the defense has to regroup going forward.

The Swarm had 55 shots on the Buffalo duo in net, Dietrich and Thompson, while the Bandits had 51 shots on Patterson and Disher. The Swarm went 6 of 7 on the power play; however, they gave up three goals on five Bandit power plays. The Swarm won the loose ball battle, 70-56 and won 21 of 37 face offs. The Swarm were penalized 7 times for 14 minutes while the Bandits were sent to the box 9 times for 18 minutes.

The league has their All-Star Game in Portland on Saturday, March 10th at 9:00 pm CST in Portland. The game will be televised at 1:30 CST on Sunday, March 11th at 1:30 pm CST on Versus. The Swarm will be represented by forward Ryan Ward and team captain, defenseman Ryan Cousins.

The Swarm return to play in what may prove to be the biggest weekend of the year as the tangle with the Philadelphia Wings in a home and home series. The first game will be on Saturday, March 17th at 6:30 pm CST in Philadelphia. Both teams then travel to the Xcel Energy Center to resume the series on Sunday, March 18th at 5:00 pm CST. The game in Philadelphia is scheduled to be shown tape-delayed on Versus on Monday, March 19th at 9:00 pm CST. Buffalo will resume play on Saturday, March 17th in New York to face the Titans at 11:30 am CST.
