A Swarm Snowstorm Buries the Shamrox

Swarm Ticket 02/24/07

The Minnesota Swarm (5-3) continued their winning ways with a 19-11 victory over the Chicago Shamrox (3-5) in front of 6,101 hearty souls who braved a blizzard to watch lacrosse on Saturday night. The win is the Swarm’s fourth in a row and puts the team in second place in the Eastern Division.

Earlier in the week, two Swarm players, Ryan Ward and Ryan Cousins, were named to the All-Star team and on Saturday night, they continued to prove themselves worthy. Ward led the Swarm with three goals and six assists while defenseman, Cousins, assisted on three goals and scooped up eight loose balls. Sean Pollock and Mike Hominuck continue the offensive renaissance for the Swarm. Pollock, who was recently engaged and had his soon to be relatives in attendance, has averaged seven points a game during the winning streak scored four goals, three assists and team high ten loose balls. Hominuck added three goals and three assists. In the three games since being acquired from Portland, Hominuck has six points in each of those games.

The Swarm started fast and furious scoring four goals in the first 4:35 of the game but the Shamrox recovered and narrowed the Swarm lead to one which included a penalty shot goal by Josh Wasson after the Swarm had a third player sent to the box after a questionable slashing call on Riley Kemp. Hominuck added his second goal of the first quarter to make it 5-3 but the Shamrox tied it at five to end the quarter.

The Shamrox finally took the lead early in the second quarter and were up 7-6 four minutes in. That was about the time the Swarm decided to stop playing around. Kasey Beirnes scored two goals to lead a four goal rally which gave the Swarm a 10-7 lead at half. One of Beirnes’ goal was shorthanded as was Spencer Martin’s goal at the 5:47 mark of the quarter.

The second half of the game was a Swarm shooting gallery and a Nick Patterson showcase in goal. Pollock scored two goals in the third and Ryan Sharp scored his first goal as a member of the Swarm on a breakaway. The Swarm scored six in the quarter and Patterson didn’t let the Shamrox stay in the game by making fifteen saves on sixteen shots.

The fourth started with a 16-8 Swarm lead. The Shamrox narrowed to 16-9 before Ward to the ball on the right side, crossed in front of the crease and shot it behind his back into the net. Ward may very well be the distributor and team general on the floor but he is more than capable putting the ball in the net. The rest of quarter saw both teams exchange two goals each with Brock Boyle, who scored the first goal of the game, finishing off the Shamrox with the last goal of the game.

Patterson made 44 saves on 55 shots in a fantastic performance while the Shamrox’s Brandon Miller, who was selected to the All-Star Game, struggled giving up 14 goals on 35 shots before being replaced late in the third quarter. His replacement, Derek Collins, made 13 saves on 18 shots. Mark Miyashita was dominant on face offs again winning 20 of 33 face offs. The Swarm scored on six of 11 power plays while giving up one goal on nine Shamrox power plays. They also scored two shorthanded goals. The Swarm won the loose ball battle 72 to 67. The nineteen goals is now a Swarm record in a game which broke the record seventeen they scored last weekend against the Titans. In this four game winning streak, the Swarm have won three of the games on the road which is the team’s longest road winning streak.

The Swarm will have a tough test in their next game to extend their winning streak to five. They will host the Buffalo Bandits, the team that eliminated them from the playoffs last year and beat them in Buffalo earlier this year, 22-13, at the Xcel Energy Center on Sunday, March 4 at 1:00 pm CST. The Shamrox play the Arizona Sting in Glendale, Arizona on Friday, March 2 at 8:30 pm CST.
