Pointstreak Swarm Notes

The Swarm fought hard and came back to tie it three times in the 2nd Half but fell to the Knighthawks 10-9 in Rochester.

#18 Andrew Biers started off the scoring for Minnesota with his first goal for the Swarm. That goal gave the Swarm a 1-0 lead before the Swarm started to visit the box. Especially costly was a five minute major on Ryan Cousins in the first that led to two Knighthawk goals. After the Knighthawks scored to make it 2-1 with 21 seconds to go in the 1st Quarter, John Grant gets the ball right off the face off and buries it with four seconds to go in the quarter to give Rochester the 3-1 lead. The Swarm defense looked as if they eased up a bit on Grant as he scored instead of running out the clock.

Grant scored two more on the power play to open the 2nd Quarter before #22 Kasey Beirnes goes to the crease on the power play to give the Swarm their second goal of the night to make it 5-2. #44 Ryan Ward got his first of the night on the power play to make it 5-3. After a Knighthawk goal, the Swarm rally for two goals from Beirnes and Ward again to send the game to the half at 6-5 in favor of the Knighthawks. Beirnes goal to make it 6-4 was nice as he tiptoed across the crease to score it.

The third quarter started with the Swarm tying the game on a goal by #17 Sean Pollock on a behind the back pass from Ward. Rochester netted two goals to give the Knighthawks a 8-6 lead to end the third. In the third, both goalies, #1 Matt Disher for the Swarm and #39 Pat O'Toole for the Knighthawks, were fantastic as both teams had ample opportunity to add to the score.

The fourth quarter saw the Swarm rally again. Beirnes gets his third on the night as continues his hard work on the crease to make it 8-7. After a loose ball in front of the net, #10 Brock Boyle jumps into the air to grab it and while still in the air puts it over O'Toole's shoulder to tie the game at eight. The Knighthawks came back again with #19 Scott Evans scoring his third goal in a row to give the lead back to Rochester at 9-8. Biers counters with a breakaway goal to tie the game up again at nine. However when you play Rochester, John Grant is the showstopper and he did in yet another Knighthawk opponent when he scored the game winner after being triple teamed with 4:42 left in the game. The Swarm tried to tie it up and were on the powerplay for a significant time but they couldn't put the biscuit in the basket to tie the game.

With the loss, the Swarm fall to 7-7. They play Sunday night, April 9th, at 5pm CST at the Xcel Energy Center against the San Jose Stealth (5-8), With the loss, the Swarm will not be able to clinch a playoff berth if they beat San Jose tomorrow night. However, in order to clinch a berth next weekend against the Portland Lumberjax (9-5) they will need to beat San Jose.

The Buffalo Bandits beat the Colorado Mammoth 14-12 to win the East Division. The Philadelphia Wings lost in overtime to the Toronto Rock 15-14 after being up 14-8 early in the fourth quarter. Only Buffalo is in right now, the rest are still fighting.

Standings in the East:

  1. Buffalo Bandits 10-4 (Division Winners)
  2. Rochester Knighthawks 8-7
  3. Toronto Rock 8-7
  4. MINNESOTA SWARM 7-7
  5. Philadelphia Wings 7-7

#44 Ryan Ward (2g 3a) and #17 Sean Pollock (1g 4a) led the Swarm with five points. #22 Kasey Beirnes (3g 0a) picked up the hat trick with three goals. #1 Matt Disher saved 46 of 56 shots.
