Minnesota Swarm (5-5) 13

Philadelphia Wings (4-7) 12

The Swarm Ma-Rohl the Wings

Saturday, March 14, 2009
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Attendance: 10,160

Minnesota Swarm Assistant Head Coach Mike Lines knows the money play for this team. The play that when needed once a game, produces results. So when the Swarm called timeout last Saturday against the Philadelphia Wings with 14 seconds left in a 12-12 tie, there was no time like the present to put the money play in action. The money play was get the ball to Dan Marohl behind the net and let him unleash the "Air Marohl" or find an open shooter. Marohl got the ball from Aaron Wilson and saw the best opportunity to be himself. He dived to the left of Wings goaltender Rob Blasdell and tucked in with 4.4 seconds to give the Swarm the 13-12 victory over the Wings at the Wachovia Center. The goal was reviewed by the refs but was upheld. The game winner by Marohl is his third this season and gave the Swarm their third straight victory, all on the road.

The Swarm changed things up to start the game. They actually started the game right out of the box with four straight goals from Ryan Cousins, Marohl, Wilson and Kevin Buchanan. Those four goals chased Wings starting goaltender Brandon Miller from the game. This was the Swarm's best start since going up 4-0 on the San Jose Stealth on January 10. The Swarm were not only scoring in the first quarter, their defense was also keeping the Wings off the board as they limited the Wings to only five shots on goaltender Nick Patterson, which Nick turned away with ease.

The Wings finally broke through just seconds after the fight with Athan Iannucci scoring on the crease. Cousins countered with his second goal of the night when Travis Hill intercepted a pass in the Swarm's defensive half and found Kevin Ross all alone near the crease. Ross couldn't get it by Blasdell but the rebound was scooped up by Cousins, who put it in the net. The Wings scored twice before Marohl got his second of the night right off the TV timeout. Iannucci closed the scoring in the first half and the Swarm lead at halftime was cut in half from four to two at 6-4.

Buchanan started the third with a rocket over Blasdell's shoulder to make it 7-4. The big fight of the night happenend next when Sean Pollock and Rob Van Beek had a disagreement. In a sprited back and forth fight, Pollock drew blood from Van Beek. That seemed to give the Wings some steam and they capitalized with a couple quick goals after that including one in which Drew Westervelt beat Joe Cinosky one on one to the net as no one came to help Cinosky. After the goal, Westervelt taunted Cinosky, who did not take kindly to it. The refs broke them up and Westervelt was sent to the box for unsportsmanlike conduct. Just after the Wings killed the Swarm power play off that penalty, Buchanan takes the ball to the side of net, stops and pivots around to find Wilson charging towards the net to make it 8-6. Each team then traded their only power play goals of the night with Iannucci getting the Wings power play goal to make it 8-7. Then the Swarm went on the power play and Pollock converted with 1:21 left in the quarter.

The Wings came out strong to start the final quarter with three straight goals including a shorthanded goal by Merrick Thomson that gave the Wings their first lead of the game at 10-9. Marohl tied it back up at ten but it only took 24 seconds for Iannucci to give the lead back to the Wings with his fifth goal of the night. After that, controversy took over the game, at least according to Wings supporters. It started when Wilson tied the game as he came around the top to get open and unloaded on Blasdell. It appeared the shot may have not crossed the goal line before the shot clock read zero. The Wings tried to challenge but shot clock violations are not reviewable and the goal stood. Ryan Ward scored shortly thereafter to put the Swarm up one, but the Wings challenged once again and the review of the play found Wilson in the crease at the time of goal. The refs waived the goal off and the game was still tied at eleven. The action went back and forth for a while with Nick Patterson making a huge save on a Thomas Hajek breakaway. That led to Pollock with the ball behind the net and Steve Panarelli covering him like a blanket. With Panarelli still draped over him, Pollock was able to bring the ball to the front of the net and find an opening to score to make it 12-11. The Wings wanted to challenge the goal since they believed Pollock was in the crease but they were out of challenges. The Wings still had a bullet to fire and Thomson fired it after spinning off of Cousins on the crease and diving to score to tie it at twelve with 1:25 to go. The goal was reviewed and upheld as it was clear that Thomson was not on the ground in the crease; however, since the review was with under two minutes left in the game, the officials initiated the review not the Swarm, so the Swarm still had their time out. That time out was huge when it was called with fourteen seconds left in the game since it set up the game winner by Marohl described previously.

Marohl scored four goals to lead the Swarm. His game winner not only was his third this season, it also was his second in a row as he got the game winner against Buffalo on February 28. Wilson is definitely fitting in well with his new team as he got another three goals and four assists. Buchanan may get his second straight NLL Rookie of the Week award with a two goal and five assist performance. Hill had his third consecutive game with more face offs won than lost as he won 19 of 28 face offs. Patterson continued with his success from the Buffalo game with 35 saves on 47 shots. Patterson was in net for the whole game on Saturday for the first time since the San Jose game on January 10, in between that time, he started three games but Kevin Croswell came in relief in all three. Iannucci led the Wings with five goals and three assists, which was a season high. Iannucci has played in five games this season and has eight goals, all of which were scored against the Swarm.

The win for the Swarm kept them in fourth place. They are only an half game behind third place, Colorado, who they play this upcoming Saturday. With losses for both San Jose and Edmonton this past weekend, the Swarm have a two game lead on both of those teams for the battle for the last playoff spot.
