Minnesota Swarm (2-2) 8

Calgary Roughnecks (5-0) 13

Roughnecks 5-0 Overall and 5-0 in First Quarter

Friday, February 6, 2009
Calgary, Alberta
Attendance: 10,090

Leading up to the weekend, the game between the Minnesota Swarm and the Calgary Roughnecks was hyped as the best of the weekend as the top two teams in the West battled. By the end of Friday night, the hype was only half realized as the Roughnecks lived up to it but the Swarm did not in the Roughnecks 13-8 victory. The win gave the Roughnecks a two and half game lead in the West and a best ever 5-0 start and five game winning streak. The loss was the second straight for the Swarm and both losses came against undefeated teams with Buffalo being the first.

The Swarm got behind early and deep in this game. Roughnecks captain Tracey Kelusky started his hot night with the first goal of the game on the power play at the 3:06 mark of the first quarter. Jeff Shattler led the transition onslaught with two straigtht goals on transition including a coast to coast beauty for the third goal of the game. Kelusky found Kaleb Toth and Curt Malawsky for two more goals to finish the first quarter up 5-0. This was the second time in a row the Swarm have been shutout in the first quarter of a game and these two last games are the only times in Swarm history the team has been shutout in the first quarter.

Even with a goal disallowed due to a crease violation, the Roughnecks continued their onslaught. Kelusky scored shorthanded to extend the lead to six at 5:04 of the quarter. Chad Culp was definitely spirited and got the best hit of the year so far for the Swarm when he caught Mike Carnegie just under the chin and sent him and his helmet sailing. Following up on that, Culp got the first Swarm goal of the night as he backhanded past Roughneck goaltender Pat Campbell at the 12:49 mark of the second. The 37 minutes and 49 seconds was the longest it took for the Swarm to score their first goal in team history. After Noah Talbot was called for a five minute illegal cross check with a minute left, Calgary struck with one more goal with ten seconds left on a Toth power play goal to go to the locker room with a 7-1 lead.

The Swarm had to still kill four minutes of the Talbot penalty to start the third but fell short. Just 42 seconds into the third, Dane Dobbie got the second goal on the five minute major for the Roughnecks. Dean Hill answered with a wraparound past Campbell which was upheld after a Calgary challenge. When Jeff Moleski out ran the Swarm defense to score past Nick Patterson to make it 9-3, the Swarm made the goaltender change to Kevin Croswell. The change produced a temporary momentum shift with three straight Swarm goals started by Kevin Fines who scored right off the faceoff following Croswell's entry into the game. Kevin Ross added to the rally with a hard rocket from the left of Campbell and then Ryan Ward scored on the power play to cut the lead to 9-5. Kelusky as usual daggered the Swarm with a goal to end the rally. After another goal by Toth, the Roughnecks were up 11-5 heading into the fourth.

Culp starts the fourth with a bounce shot past Campbell just 27 seconds in. Both defenses clamped down for the nearly the next nine mintues until Josh Sanderson scored on the power play with three seconds left a man up. Andrew Watt then scooped up a loose ball near the crease and put it past Campbell to make it 12-7. Travis Hill finished the Swarm scoring with a breakaway and Kelusky got one late while shorthanded for the Roughnecks to finish the game 13-8 in the Roughnecks favor.

Culp led the Swarm with two goals and one assist. Kelusky led the Roughnecks with four goals and five assists which included two shorthanded and one power play goal.
