February 2006 Updates

January 2006 | Current Month | Other Months | March 2006

  • 02/25/06 - Cousins and Gibson Each Get a Goal in All-Star Game

Captain Ryan Cousins and Darryl Gibson each had a goal but the West All-Stars rallied from a 13-9 defecit to beat the East All-Stars by a score of 14-13 in the 2006 All-Star Game in Toronto. The winning goal by Lewis Ratcliff for the West after a late timeout with four seconds left occurred with the East coaches not having either Cousins or Gibson out on defense for the East. Ergo, the West score and win.

  • 02/20/06 - Darryl Gibson Named to All-Star Team

The NLL announced that Darryl Gibson will be an All-Star for the East Division as he will replace the Knighthawks' Marshall Abrams, who will miss the game due to injury. Gibson was acquired by the Swarm in a deal last summer from the Arizona Sting. Gibson has 4 assists and 38 loose balls in eight games this year and is eight year veteran who will be making his All-Star debut. He will join Captain Ryan Cousins as being All-Star representatives for the Swarm.

  • 02/18/06 - Review: Swarm 9 Bandits 14

The Minnesota Swarm (4-4) continued their struggles against the Buffalo Bandits (4-2) on Saturday night with a 14-9 loss in Buffalo. The defense struggled with both Ryan Cousins (suspension) and Noah Talbot both not playing in the game. The Bandits had a strong third quarter which saw them outscore the Swarm 5-1 en route to being up 12-6 going into the fourth quarter. Chad Culp led the Swarm with 2 goals and 2 assists and Spencer Martin scored his first goal in a Swarm uniform.

  • 02/17/06 - Preview: Swarm at Bandits

The Minnesota Swarm (4-3) travel to take on the Buffalo Bandits (3-2) at HSBC Arena on Saturday night in a huge Eastern Division battle. The Swarm are on two game losing and are looking to get their first victory over the Bandits in team history. Last year, the Swarm lost all three games to the Bandits.

  • 02/17/06 - The NLL Expands to Chicago

Good News for Swarm fans! The NLL announced that the league will expand to Chicago for the 2007 season and play in the Chicago suburb of Hoffman Estates at the soon to be brand new Sears Centre. Now, Swarm fans have a team nearby that they can easily drive to see the Swarm battle with. This should develop into a great rivalry. Of course, this means an expansion draft will occur sometime this summer meaning the Swarm may lose a player or two.

  • 02/16/06 - Scott Stewart's Season Over

Newly acquired forward Scott Stewart suffered a season ending knee injury in his first game for the Swarm last Friday in the second quarter of the Swarm's win over the Philadelphia Wings. Stewart was doing well with a goal already so it is tough to see that he will be on injured reserve for the rest of the season. The Swarm have activated Travis Hill off the practice roster and signed him to an one-year contract.

  • 02/15/06 - More Weekly Awards for the Swarm

Chad Culp wins the NLL overall and offensive player of the week for his game winning performance against the Wings with 4 goals and 4 assists. This is the first of hopefully more to come for Chad.

Nick Patterson wins the NLL defensive player of the week for his 41 saves against the Wings. This is the second week in a row. Also, Nick won the overall award in Week 4 against the Rush. Heck, if you win all these awards week in, week out, you would think he would be picked to the All-Star game. Well, wouldn't you?

The only reason a Swarm player didn't win NLL rookie of the week was because none of our rookies played last week.

  • 02/14/06 - Ryan Cousins Named to East All-Star Team

The National Lacrosse League announced All-Star Reserves today for the game on February 25th in Toronto and the only one Swarm player was named today. That player is team captain Ryan Cousins who has 4 assists and 28 loose balls in five games this season. Cousins has represented the Swarm in both of their seasons in the NLL and is emerging as one of the best defenders in the league. Of course, only one player from the team is too few in my mind as I feel Nick Patterson and Ryan Ward are deserving as well not too mention that the team has a winning record (4-3) after seven games this season.

  • 02/10/06 - Review: Swarm 11 Wings 10

The Swarm got the crowd jacked up last night with their first home victory of the year, an 11-10 win over the Philadelphia Wings. With the victory and before Saturday night s games, the Swarm are only a half game out of first place and squarely in playoff contention. Chad Culp had a great night for the team with four goals and four assists including the game winner with 3:08 left in the game.

  • 02/10/06 - Spencer Martin Signed by the Swarm

The Minnesota Swarm signed Spencer Martin in time for this week's home game against the Philadelphia Wings. Martin, is the brother of Andrew Martin, who played for the Swarm last year. The 6' 0" 185 lbs. lefthanded forward scored 1 goal and 1 assist in 4 games this year for the San Jose Stealth before being released. Last year, he scored 6 goals and 8 assists in 10 games with the Stealth. The five year NLL veteran has 36 goals and 42 assists in 42 games.

The Swarm released Mark Miyashita in a surprising move considering his flexibility on the squad. Miyashita had played in four games with a goal, three assists and 26 of 71 on faceoffs.

  • 02/09/06 - Preview: Swarm vs Wings

The Minnesota Swarm (3-3) are looking to find success at The Hive this year having lost all three at home this season. On Friday, they face for the third time this season, the Philadelphia Wings (3-1). Both teams have beaten each other once this season as visitors.

  • 02/08/06 - Patterson Named NLL Defensive Player of the Week

Nick Patterson was named the NLL Defensive Player of the Week ending February 4, 2006 after he saved 40 of 46 shots in a 7-6 victory over the Edmonton Rush last Friday. Patterson has started and finished all three Swarm road games this year, all victories for the team. He has not yet played at The Hive this year.

  • 02/03/06 - Review: Swarm 7 Rush 6

The Minnesota Swarm (3-3) continue their road success winning all three behind Nick Patterson's goaltending as they beat the expansion Edmonton Rush (0-5), 7-6, in the Swarm's lowest scoring game in team history. The seven goals were the least the team has scored in a victory but seven was all that was needed as Patterson saved 40 of 46 shots. All seven Swarm goals were scored by seven separate Swarm players. Brock Boyle's goal with a minute left in the game gave the Swarm their largest lead of the game at 7-5 and was just enough to keep the Rush in losing column.

  • 02/02/06 - Preview: Swarm at Rush

The Swarm are traveling to Edmonton for a game Friday against the expansion Rush. The Rush are 0-4 so far this year after a 14-8 loss to the Toronto Rock last Friday night. The Rush are strong defensively but have had trouble offensively especially on the power play.

  • 02/02/06 - Swarm Trade: Stewart from Portland for Bateman

The Minnesota Swarm traded 2004 First Round pick and 2005 All-NLL Rookie Team member Ryder Bateman to the Portland LumberJax for forward Scott Stewart. Bateman had 20 goals and 19 assists in 2005 but has not played in 2006 due to fire fighting training that conflicts with playing for the Swarm. Stewart had two goals and two assists for the LumberJax this season. In his five year career, the Hamilton, Ontario native has 91 goals and 88 assists in 67 games. He was the third overall pick in the 2001 Draft by the New Jersey Storm.
