IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 11 - 20
19 Jordan Ackie, RD, Kitchener-Waterloo Jr A, Canada/Canada East WJLC & Guelph
Ackie is a steady defender with a solid lacrosse IQ and enough speed and skill to help you clear the zone. He can also win faceoffs and just won't make a lot of mistakes. He's not flashy, but he's the kind of defender who enters the league without a lot of fanfare and goes on to have a long, successful career. He's also to play right away, which gives him an edge that could see him drafted higher than this ranking. You may have noticed that he's only the fourth defender and second righty to appear to this point; for a team that has a gap on righty D, he could be just the guy to fill it.

IL Indoor 04/27/20 - Stamper's Musings: Imagining the 2020 NLL Draft Without College Players
7 Philadelphia Wings
Hunter Aggus, RT, Hamilton Bengals Jr B and Paris RiverWolves
Aggus is a risk/reward type player. He's big and strong, can play a robust game and has the speed and stick skills to be dangerous in transition. Aggus put up 35 goals in the last two Jr B seasons with the Bengals and got into a handful of games with the Jr A Burlington Chiefs. He also played for Canada at the World Juniors in 2018 and has spent the last two winters with Paris in the ALL; in both situations he showed he can be one of the better players on the floor. He also does at least one thing every game that just makes you shake your head and wonder what he was thinking. The latter tendency must have overshadowed his talent for NLL evaluators as he was passed over after declaring early for last year's draft.

IL Indoor 08/24/20 - Stamper's Musings: Who Are the Top NLL Prospects Actually Available to Play This Year?
There are other runners who will contenders to go in the top half of the draft. Among them are Delta Islanders lefty transition player Brendan Szabo, lefty forward Adam Kitchen from the Jr B Clarington Green Gaels, Barrie Lakeshores lefty tranny Oriale Mandeville, and Hunter Aggus, a righty transition who played for the Hamilton Bengals Jr B and the Paris RiverWolves in the ALL. Bryan Costabile is also an intriguing prospect; with no box experience but a dynamic game that could translate, the Notre Dame grad played in the PLL this summer so he has moved on from college

IL Indoor 09/11/20 - 2020 NLL Draft: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects — 41-50
49 Hunter Aggus, RT, Hamilton Bengals Jr B and Paris RiverWolves
Aggus is a risk/reward type player. He's big and strong, can play a robust game and has the speed and stick skills to be dangerous in transition. Aggus put up 35 goals in the last two Jr B seasons with the Bengals and got into a handful of games with the Jr A Burlington Chiefs. He also played for Canada at the World Juniors in 2018 and has spent the last two winters with Paris in the ALL; in both situations he showed he can be one of the better players on the floor. He also tends to do make at least one glaringly poor decision per game. The latter tendency must have overshadowed his talent for NLL evaluators as he was passed over after declaring early for last year's draft. I'm not going to slam Aggus too much for making mistakes; we all make them and I know I would reconsider some of my decisions when I was his age if given the chance. With solid coaching and some maturation, he could develop into a solid pro player.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 41 - 50
42 Hunter Aggus, RT, Six Nations Jr A, Paris RiverWolves ALL, Canada/Canada West WJLC
Aggus has been through two drafts without being selected since entering the 2019 draft early. Since then, his resume consists of being named an Arena Lacrosse League second-team all-star, playing the abbreviated OJLL season with the Six Nations Arrows and representing Canada West at the recent World Junior Lacrosse Championship in Winnipeg. In each he showed some development. Aggus was effective in transition for Paris, scoring 7 goals and 4 assists in 10 games. He played more of a stay-at-home role for Six Nations and provided a physical presence for the Arrows. He leaned towards the latter with Canada West, although he was a key player in their breakout. Aggus has shown some maturation on and off the floor. He still needs to focus on his fitness and speeding up the thinking process, but he shows promise that he'll be able to eventually make effective use of his 6-2, 210-pound frame.

13 Ryan Barnable, LD, Whitby Warriors Jr A & RIT
Barnable can play all over the floor and did well in whatever role was asked of him for Whitby, scoring 74 points in three Jr A seasons. His future in the NLL is probably going out the back door.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 11 - 20
11 Ryan Barnable, LT, Whitby Warriors Jr A & RIT
Barnable did get to play this summer, suiting up for seven games with Whitby in the OJLL season held over two weekends. His play there reinforced what had been evident before: he's a solid defender with a nice blend of grit and enough skill to stay up and play some shifts on offence if you need him to.

2019 OLA Jr A Transition Player of the Year

IL Indoor 01/20/21 - Stamper's Musings: My Not Quite as Way Early as Usual Way Early NLL Mock Draft
6 Jake Boudreau, LT, Brampton Excelsiors Jr A & Robert Morris
Boudreau was the Ontario Jr A transition player of the year in 2019. He's the next in a string of athletic, talented and smart defence/transition studs coming out of Brampton (Robert Hudson, Connor McClelland, Warren Jeffrey and Adam Wiedemann were all taken in the first round over the last three drafts). It's a shame for Boudreau, as for all the players in this class, that he didn't get the chance to play senior lacrosse; a season of MSL did wonders for the draft stock of the quartet of recent Excelsiors first rounders. Boudreau scored 105 points over his last three junior seasons and appears ready to play at the next level.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 1 - 10
5 Jake Boudreau, LT, Brampton Excelsiors Jr A & Robert Morris
The gauntlet has been thrown down over the last three drafts. A Brampton defender/transition player has gone in the top half of the first round in each: Adam Wiedemann 8th in 2018, Warren Jeffrey (Mimico Jr A but played a season with Brampton in MSL before his draft) 6th in 2019 and Robert Hudson 6th in 2020. Boudreau has a chance to be an earlier pick than any of them. Boudreau doesn't have the advantage they all had of playing a season of senior lacrosse before the draft, and that helped all three of them immensely. But Boudreau was the most polished and accomplished of the lot in junior. He was the OJLL transition player of the year in his last Jr season, 2019; he scored 30 points that year but had put up 52, including 22 goals, the summer before. Boudreau is fast, smart and versatile, a perfect combination for the NLL game. Ranking Boudreau is a bit difficult because we haven't seen him play since 2019; recency bias may lead to considering moving Mike McCannell ahead of Boudreau. The Excelsiors product retains his spot, though, because he was so good two years ago that it's unnecessary to project what he can be—he has already shown it.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 11 - 20
13 Taite Cattoni, LF, Peterborough Lakers Jr A & Johns Hopkins, Trent
It's possible that Cattoni could rise above the rest of the group of lefties mentioned above by virtue of being available to play immediately; he renounced his NCAA eligibility and is now studying at Trent University. Cattoni isn't just a smaller version of his brother Holden, the Rochester Knighthawks' star. The younger Cattoni does have a similarly fluid shot. He's also agile and shifty, and unafraid to go to the dirty areas. Ranking him takes even more projection than for many players this year because he missed his final year of Jr A (2019) because of injury and hasn't had a chance to play this summer because the Peterborough Lakers opted out of the MSL Classic season. We know Cattoni is good, it's just hard to say how well his game will translate because we haven't had a chance to see him compete against men or at all for three years.

Cecile climbed in my rankings at the World Junior Lacrosse Championship in Winnipeg. I hadn't had much opportunity to see him play in person and he was impressive when I did. While two of his three goals in the tournament happening to wind up as game-winners is a bit of a fluke, there was nothing flukey about how he was scoring; Cecile showed off speed, stick skills, sound decision-making and even some nifty creativity on the run. He also plays solid team defence and commits to the D zone before venturing out in transition.

IL Indoor 10/17/18 - Stamper's Musings: Early Mock Draft for 2019, Plus Really Early Contenders for 2020 & 2021
Looking Ahead to 2021
Adam Charalambides, LF, Orangeville Northmen Jr A & Rutgers
Charalambides' route to the NLL draft will certainly be an unusual one. He will be 25 years old and probably holding a Masters degree when he comes out in 2021, which he has confirmed to me is when he plans to enter the draft. Charalambides was a rising prospect after his first full season of Jr A with the Northmen in 2016. He scored 35 goals and 39 assists in 17 regular season games then added 38 goals and 48 assists in 21 games in the playoffs. The next summer, the Brampton Excelsiors acquired him to push a talented roster over the top. Just imagine how good he could have been with Teat, Gibson and Petterson.

Really, just imagine it, because that's all you can do. Unfortunately, Charalambides has lost two seasons at Rutgers and two summers to consecutive knee injuries, which is why he will be eligible for college lacrosse until he can legally rent a car. Now Charalambides is ready to return, his knees are feeling strong and he may be more excited to get onto the field this school year than any other player in the NCAA. It's hard to say how he will fare coming back off the surgeries, but Randy Staats went through the same thing and has turned out just fine, and Charalambides has three summers to prove to himself and NLL GMs what he can do.

IL Indoor 10/22/19 - Stamper's Musings: Early 2020 NLL Mock Draft, Plus Who to Watch for '21 & '22
Adam Charalambides LF Rutgers
It was fair to question how Charalambides would come back from successive college seasons lost to knee injuries. He answered any questions emphatically by producing the third-highest goal-scoring season in Rutgers history, finishing seventh nationally in goals per game and earning first-team All-Big Ten honours. Charalambides' last summer of box lacrosse saw the Halton Hills product join Orangeville, where he put up 35/39/74 in 17 regular season games then 38/48/86 in 21 playoff games.

IL Indoor 01/20/21 - Stamper's Musings: My Not Quite as Way Early as Usual Way Early NLL Mock Draft
4 Adam Charalambides, LF, Orangeville Northmen Jr A & Rutgers
There may not be a more vexing player to project for this draft. Based on talent and production in junior lacrosse, the Halton Hills Jr C and Jr B star is without question one of the top prospects for 2021. He had a successful season in his only full summer of Jr A with Orangeville in 2016 but missed out on a chance to really blow everyone's socks off in 2017. The Brampton Excelsiors had acquired him to bolster an attack led by Jeff Teat, Tyson Gibson and Clarke Petterson that made them strong Minto Cup contenders. He blew his knee out before he could join them, then suffered another devastating knee injury the following year. Those injuries kept him out of summer box and also kept him in school, as he received two redshirt years of eligibility. Tack on the Covid-19 extra year of eligibility and Charalambides has been at Rutgers for five years, completing bachelors and masters degrees. He's unquestionably a great talent, but we haven't seen him play box for five years now and he'll be 25 years old this year. It could make a huge difference for him if there's an MSL season this summer, but even if he does get a chance to play, you have to figure that some teams would be inclined to take someone three or four years younger if they believe the younger player has potential close to his. That could cause him to fall, but someone in the top half of the first round will surely pull the trigger on a lefty forward with Charalambides' talent level.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 1 - 10
3 Adam Charalambides, LF, Orangeville Northmen Jr A & Rutgers
Charalambides is highly athletic and skilled. He showed in his Rutgers season this spring that he has no substantial lingering effects from the knee injuries that cost him back to back college and summer lacrosse seasons. The downside to his status as a top prospect is that he turns 25 this year and hasn't played a season of box lacrosse since 2016. He also only played one season of Jr A lacrosse, suiting up before his lone Orangeville season with the Halton Hills Bulldogs, starting in Jr C and progressing to Jr B (he got better and better as he progressed through that journey, culminating in a stirring run leading Orangeville to the Minto Cup final with 86 points in 21 playoff games). The upside is that he's a big, athletic, skilled and intelligent lefty forward who is done at school and ready to play in the NLL immediately.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 41 - 50
47 Riley Curtis, LF, Cobourg Kodiaks MSL, Bighorns CCBL & Denver
Curtis led all National Collegiate Box Series players with 46 goals this year, scoring 5 or more in seven of his nine games. That doesn't mean too much, because the NCBS is a great vehicle for college players to compete in box but is still in its early years with the majority of players just learning the indoor game. It does, however, suggest that Curtis is healthy and ready to fulfill the promise that was curtailed by injuries in his junior career. He showed enough in his two Jr A seasons split between Brampton and Peterborough that Cobourg surprised the rest of the league at the 2020 Major Series Lacrosse draft by taking him 10th overall. He's played one game with the Kodiaks this summer, so the sample size is minuscule; in that game he posted 3 assists but definitely looked like a player slowly adjusting to playing against high-calibre competition after three years without a chance to do so. It is challenging to project how his adjustment will go, but Curtis has the talent to at least earn him an opportunity.

41 Aidan Danby, RD, Delta Islanders Jr A, South Okanagan Flames Jr B, Canada/Canada West WJLC
Danby may not be as polished as some of the defenders who appear on this list, but he has plenty of potential to keep improving after making the move from the interior of British Columbia to the coast to play Jr A lacrosse. He needs to rein in his tendency to pile up penalty minutes, but as he fills out his 6-3 frame and continues to raise his lacrosse IQ by playing against better competition and soaking up coaching, Danby's ceiling could be high. His positioning here in the list is more about what he could be in a few years than what he is right now, because Danby has shown flashes of a becoming a dominating defender.

IL Indoor 10/22/19 - Stamper's Musings: Early 2020 NLL Mock Draft, Plus Who to Watch for '21 & '22
Jonathan Donville RF Mimico Mountaineers Jr A & Cornell
Donville is a little bigger and sturdier than Lanchbury and while he may not have quite as diverse a skill set he is still extremely talented. Played just five regular season games with Orangeville after being traded to the Northmen at the deadline but was sensational in the playoffs and Minto Cup, scoring 48 goals and 44 assists for 92 points in 20 games as the Hornheads won the national championship.

IL Indoor 01/20/21 - Stamper's Musings: My Not Quite as Way Early as Usual Way Early NLL Mock Draft
1 Jonathan Donville, RF, Orangeville Northmen Jr A & Cornell
The last we saw of the Mimico Mountaineers product in the box was his brilliant Minto Cup run with the Orangeville Northmen after a trade deadline deal in the summer of 2019. Donville scored 92 points, including 48 goals, in 20 playoff games to lead the Hornheads to the national title. He shows a blend of size, strength and skill that makes him a perfect candidate to transition quickly to NLL success. As with all of these players, it would have been great for Donville to get some seasoning with Brooklin Lacrosse Club, who took him with the first overall pick in the Major Series Lacrosse draft in January, 2020, but he may be better suited than anyone else in this draft to step up to the pro level even if he never gets a chance to play against men before he arrives there.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 1 - 10
1 Jonathan Donville, RF, Brooklin Lacrosse Club MSL & Cornell
Donville is physically gifted with great skill. Beyond that, he has tremendous vision, lacrosse IQ and creativity. He's a pretty complete offensive player with strong character. There aren't many boxes that Donville doesn't tick when it comes to a checklist of things you'd want in a franchise forward. This summer gave him a chance to play against men and he responded with a tremendous rookie Major Series Lacrosse season with the Brooklin Lacrosse Club. He scored 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points in five games, but even that is misleading. He got slightly dinged up early in his final game and didn't return as a precaution, so he scored only 1 point in that game. A perfectly symmetrical 12g/12a line in four games shows that he wasn't just one of the top rookies in the youth-laden MSL Classic series this summer, he was one of the best players, period. The one thing that may give pause to a team picking at or near the top of the draft is that he's returning to school, attending Maryland, for the extra Covid-19 year of eligibility. He's worth the wait.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 11 - 20
17 Jacob Dunbar, RF, Port Coquitlam Saints Jr A, Canada WJLC
Dunbar was a late renunciation, so not much hype has built up around him. He ripped it up in the 2021 BCJALL season, though, finishing second in the regular season in goals with 29 despite playing only eight games to leader Casey Wilson's 10. Dunbar then led the loop by a mile with 17 playoff goals, again even though he played fewer games than all but one player who finished within 7 goals of his total. He scored 3 or more goals in over half of the 13 games he played. Dunbar can score from outside but is equally effective and eager to go inside as well.

The comp I've heard for Forgrave from multiple acute observers is Shayne Jackson, which is very high praise. As one opposing coach said, when you play the Miners Forgrave is the problem your defence has to deal with if you're going to be successful. He was an RMLL 2nd team all star in 2019 and one of the top scorers in the league this summer. What jumps off the screen is his floor awareness to find open space and the quickness of his hands.

IL Indoor 01/25/21 - Stamper's Musings: More Players to Keep an Eye on for the 2021 NLL Draft
Jake Foster, RF, Calgary Mountaineers Sr B & Maryville
Brett McIntyre went 22nd overall to Colorado last year. Here's how their stats compared in 2016, each player's highest-scoring season in the Rocky Mountain Jr A league:

McIntyre—20 games played, 59 goals, 48 assists, 107 points
Foster—19 games played, 54 goals, 51 assists, 105 points

Now, McIntyre followed that up with a 58/45/103 line in 2017 and added 41 goals in '18 while Foster's lines for those two seasons were 36/35/71 and 31/37/68. Still, Foster has shown that he's a talented scorer. One aspect where Foster comes out ahead of McIntyre is size: McIntyre is listed at 5'8”, 175 pounds on his player page at UMBC; Foster is listed on his Marysville at 6'2”, 225. He will be a pretty high pick and you never know, he could be a first rounder.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 21 - 30
27 Jake Foster, RF, Calgary Mountaineers Sr B & Maryville
Foster's production peaked in 2016 when he lit up the RMJLL with 54 goals and 51 assists for a cool 105 points. While he didn't score at the same rate the next two years, he did still put up two more 30-goal seasons. Losing his 2019 rookie Sr B season to a knee injury stalled his development a bit, particularly in conjunction with the pandemic keeping him from being able to get back on the floor till this summer. His obvious strengths are his size (6'2”, 235) and skill; less obvious but equally important is his ability not just to willingly accept but also apply coaching to his game. He is considered a good teammate who enjoys the game and helps folks he's playing with do so, as well.

IL Indoor 01/20/21 - Stamper's Musings: My Not Quite as Way Early as Usual Way Early NLL Mock Draft
14 Nathan Grenon, LF, Brampton Excelsiors Jr A & Mercyhurst
Grenon's production burgeoned in Brampton in 2019 as a useful third option alongside Seth Van Schepen and Austin Hasen. He almost doubled his previous season high scoring total from a few years with the Toronto Beaches, posting 29 goals and 28 assists to finish third on the Excelsiors in points. He's a talented young player who was really coming into his own the last chance he got to play.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 11 - 20
12 Nathan Grenon, LF, Brampton Excelsiors Jr A & Mercyhurst
Grenon was already high in my rankings before the OJLL season this summer; he definitely reinforced his candidacy to be a first-round pick with a strong showing, scoring 11 goals and 12 assists in eight games then being the most dangerous Excelsior in the championship game. At least, he looked like their best player that day until he was ejected for getting into a fight. Standing up for a teammate who had taken a big hit was in character for the gritty Grenon, who showed he's as comfortable dropping the mitts as he is driving to the net for a spectacular scoring play. The downside of his reaction was that he was unavailable to his team for the remainder of a close title tilt that they wound up losing by one goal. Things happen fast during a game and stepping up was obviously instinctive for Grenon, which is commendable. Also, in an NLL game he'd just have to sit for five minutes for doing so. I saw some commenters suggest that the fight raised Grenon's draft stock; I don't think that's true, but I also don't think it should hurt his stock much, either. Grenon projects as a valuable depth lefty who will score some points but is more than willing and able to do the hard work to help his teammates, with or without his gloves on.

46 Troy Gutowski, LF, Saskatchewan SWAT Jr A, Canada West WJLC
Gustowksi is from Winnipeg and a proud product of the Red River Lacrosse Association. After playing two seasons with the Manitoba Blizzard in the Rocky Mountain Jr B League, Gutowski headed west like so many players before him to play at the highest level he could. He had limited success with the Port Coquitlam Saints in 2019, scoring just 5 goals and 7 points in nine games. This summer he joined the SWAT in the RMLL Jr A loop and started to feel more comfortable, leading to substantially increased production. Gutowski is at his best when he's playing a complementary role, working off ball and using his slick hands to catch-and-shoot or feed teammates. It worked well enough at the World Juniors that Gutowski led the 2021 tournament in assists with 10 in three games (he added 1 goal). It will take some time and development for him to have a shot at playing in the NLL, but Gutowski has shown the potential to make it worthwhile for a team to give him a go.

Flourished in a complementary role with the Beaches and will fill the same role if he's able to make an NLL roster. Hanna is a smart player who doesn't need to carry the ball. Won 2018 and 2019 Ohio Cup with the Rivermen

12/27/19 - Best in Box: National Collegiate Box Series Top 40 - 1. JACK HANNAH
With no offense to any of the extremely talented names listed in this inaugural NCBS Top 40, the easiest ranking to confirm was placing Jack Hannah right here at #1. Hannah’s obscene offensive outburst during the OCBLL regular season set new records not only in Ohio, but nationwide too. He was unstoppable during the OCBLL playoffs with 19 points in the Rivermen’s two-game series sweep of the Walleyes, and then he added another 13 points to his post-season total in the National Championship against an extremely good Fighting Bison squad. His amazing athletic ability alone would make him a force, but Hannah’s silky-smooth stick, ability to create for himself and others off ball, and a command of the indoor game as good as any Canadian playing Junior ball, makes him the most sought-after American pro prospect since Joe Resetarits (drafted 6th overall by Calgary in 2012). As a sophomore last year, Hannah already factored into 15 games with DU (10 of which he started) plus put himself on NLL GM’s radars during the NCBS Final at the USBOXLA Nationals. Did we hype him too much? Honestly, not enough.

06/27/20 - Best in Box: U18 #bctour Top 25 - 1. Jack Hannah (2017)
We put him #1 in the NCBS Top 40, so Jack Hannah had to be #1 here too, right? Well, yes and no. Hannah is not #1 again because of the significant impact he’s had at DU. He’s not here for his near perfect season with the Rivermen last year where he was named league MVP, led the nation in scoring, captured the Ohio Cup, and then landed the Rivermen the first-ever NCBS National Championship. Jack Hannah is ranked #1, again, because his performance during the 2017 U18 #bctour was the best any American has had over the event’s four years north of the border. It’s a fact, Jack. Hannah set new offensive statistical standards during his single summer wearing a Team USBOXLA sweater (11 goals and 14 assists in 5 games). He was one of the key leaders on a Team USBOXLA roster whose 4-1 record was the best of any previous tour. And we agree with Bill Tierney, Jack Hannah’s compete level, even on the 2017 #bctour, is unmatched. Hannah, who was not even playing for a sanctioned USBOXLA club at the time of being selected for the squad, used that summer’s B.C. swing to let the lacrosse world know… Jack Hannah plays box now, and he’s already scary good at it. Three years later, and we’ve found out that the summer of 2017 was no fluke, it was just a coming attraction to an elite American box lacrosse career that is far from fully written.

IL Indoor 01/25/21 - Stamper's Musings: More Players to Keep an Eye on for the 2021 NLL Draft
Jack Hannah, RF, OCBLL Rivermen & Denver
Hannah is from Milford, Ohio. Hannah got a slow start in the OCBLL in 2018, scoring just 6 goals and 11 points in 8 games as a newbie. But he figured it out by the next summer and absolutely ripped up the league. He played 7 games and scored 39 goals, an average of 5.6 per game (he also added 13 assists for a total of 52 points). Hannah has size—he's listed at 6'1", 205 pounds as a midfielder for the University of Denver Pioneers.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 31 - 40
31 Jack Hannah, RF, OCBLL Rivermen & Denver
How do you project what Hannah will be able to do in high-level box lacrosse? Field lacrosse, where he was a 2021 consensus All-American midfielder, is not particularly useful predictor of box lacrosse success. Hannah does have some box on his resume, albeit in 2018 and '19 in the Ohio Collegiate Box Lacrosse League, where his opposition was almost entirely other players just learning the game. You'd expect him to excel there if he is a legitimate prospect, and you couldn't ask for much more than the 39 goals (and 52 points) in seven games he posted in the latter season. Hannah is athletic, big (6'1”, 205) and has shown a desire to play the indoor game. It's hard to say where he'll be selected or what kind of success he'll have adapting to the NLL, but someone is going to roll the dice on this exceptional athlete and they may just hit a jackpot in the long term.

Harrington is a virtual unknown, but perusing his highlight videos will give you an idea of how athletic and skilled the 6'1"”, 205-pounder is. He's also passionate about box lacrosse, seeking out every chance he gets to play the game. Harrington would have travelled up to Canada to play the last two summers if he'd been able to but, of course, was thwarted by the pandemic. He'll have time to develop his raw talent over the next couple of summers, though, as he is enrolling in a graduate program at Vermont with the extra Covid-19 year of eligibility. Because Stevenson is a D3 school, Harrington may actually have two years of eligibility remaining; D3 student-athletes were granted a second year of extra eligibility, but it is not yet clear whether that extra year can be used at a D1 school.

25 Drew Hutchison, G, Burlington Chiefs Jr A & RIT
Hutchison was backstopping the Peterborough Jr A Lakers when they fell quickly from being perennial championship contenders to regularly missing the playoffs. He stood up well to the challenge of facing a lot of rubber behind a young and raw defence. When he got a chance to compete with the Chiefs in his final year, he helped them reach an Ontario final against the eventual Minto Cup champion Orangeville Northmen in a series in which three of the five games went to overtime. Hutchison will probably take a few years to evolve into a solid NLL goalie, as the vast majority of goalies do, but he is definitely a promising prospect in the long term.

Inacio hasn't played a full season of box lacrosse since 2016, so I was surprised to see Brooklin take him as high as 14thoverall in the 2020 MSL draft, especially with players like Ron John and Oliver Bolsterli still on the board, but watching him play a couple of games for BLC this summer made me understand why they did it. For one thing, he's strong on faceoffs. That's not enough on its own, however, to make a player worth drafting high. It becomes apparent quite quickly in watching Inacio that he gets it, playing sound team defence and exercising caution in pushing the pace but going when the opportunity makes sense.

Kamminga played a big role for St. Catharines in the Athletics' OJLL championship this summer and his solid play has carried over to his four appearances with the Chiefs, who took him with the 29th pick in the 30-pick MSL draft this year and look like they may have found a bargain. He can win faceoffs, not always on the draw itself but through tenacity chasing down the loose ball or causing a turnover immediately if someone else is securing it. He can play physical defence without generally piling up tons of penalty minutes (14 of his 26 minutes in the OJLL this summer came on one play; outside of that, he didn't more than one minor in a game).

Kaschalk is heir to another line of NLL defensive prospects in Burlington (Ethan Riggs in the first round last year, Matt Marinier and Devyn Mayea in the second round the year before) and could follow Boudreau down the Brampton pipeline after the Excelsiors drafted him 9th overall in the 2020 MSL draft. Kaschalk is from Windsor and starred with the Jr B Clippers before moving up for two full seasons with the Chiefs in Jr A.

Kaschalk was a prodigy in his hometown of Windsor, playing half a dozen Jr B games with the Clippers before he even turned 15 and totalling 137 points in his three full Jr B seasons. He then headed to Burlington for three seasons of Jr A, where his scoring wasn't as prolific but he demonstrated a solid two-way game coming out the back door. Kaschalk is athletic and has shown a steadily increasing lacrosse IQ as he has played against higher calibre competition.

IL Indoor 01/20/21 - Stamper's Musings: My Not Quite as Way Early as Usual Way Early NLL Mock Draft
8 Corson Kealey, LF, Toronto Beaches Jr A & Robert Morris
In four Jr A seasons, Kealey scored 43, 42, 48 and 64 points. Sorry for the repetition—I'll try to make this the last time I say it—but another year or two of experience could have really boosted his case for the pro game. Kealey isn't as dynamically talented as his older brother JP (a New England first rounder in 2017) but he is skilled, smart and well suited to being a depth lefty at the pro level.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 1 - 10
10 Corson Kealey, LF, Brooklin Lacrosse Club MSL & Robert Morris
Kealey makes three players in the top 10 from BLC, which is becoming a factory for NLL draft picks (seven including four first-rounders in 2019 then one more first-rounder and a pair of seconds last year). If he is picked in the first round, it will also make two Kealeys picked in the NLL first round; Corson's brother JP was taken 10th overall by New England in 2016.
There is a large group of lefty forwards who will fall in the 10 to 30 range of many draft boards, and there could be vast differences in the order in which they appear. I have Kealey at the top of the group because of his consistent production from Jr B through Jr A and into senior lacrosse. He wrapped up his Jr A career with 29 goals and 64 points for the Toronto Beaches, but still somehow was available when BLC's third-round pick came around at the 2020 MSL draft. He's played just two games with the team this summer, scoring 2 goals and 1 assist in each. His skill level and lacrosse IQ suggest that kind of consistency should carry over to a much larger sample size.

IL Indoor 01/20/21 - Stamper's Musings: My Not Quite as Way Early as Usual Way Early NLL Mock Draft
9 Jack Kelly, RF, Toronto Beaches Jr A & Penn State
Another player who missed the 2019 season because of injuries, Kelly is an extremely difficult prospect to evaluate and place in a list like this. His talent is tantalizing, which led the Oakville Rock to take him with the 7th overall pick in the 2020 MSL draft. He could have gone even higher in that draft had he been healthy. He has a high ceiling. Kelly also has limited production on his resume at the Jr A level, having peaked at 55 points in in 2017. He can play well all over the floor, though, and his relatively low point totals are partly a result of playing some transition with the Beaches rather than strictly at forward. The question is whether he's one of those players who is good at both positions but not great at either, or if he just needs to find the right opportunity and role in which he can shine.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 11 - 20
14 Jack Kelly, RT/F, Oakville Rock MSL & Penn State
Like so many players in this draft, the playing time missed to the pandemic feels like it would have been crucial to Kelly's continued development. He played a versatile game for the Beaches in Jr A, excelling on offence, defence and special teams. Kelly is sometimes seen as a forward, but his more likely spot in the NLL is a transition role. He played some of each for Oakville in his four games with the Rock this summer; some rust was apparent up front but he looked more comfortable and confident and he went. Not coincidentally, he played more out the back door as other players returned to populate the right side of the offence.

28 Caleb Kueber, LF/T, Victoria Shamrocks Jr A, England & Mercyhurst
Kueber's production isn't in line with that of many of the highly-rated forwards in this list. That's because he has spent substantial time playing a transition role rather than just offence. His scoring peak in Jr A came with 39 points in 16 games with the Shamrocks in 2019, after which he added 15 points in 16 playoffs games for the Minto Cup finalists. He represented England at the 2019 WILC in Langley and had an eye-catching playoff run, netting 6 goals and 7 assists in four games as he played more in the offensive zone. Whether he is a forward or transition player in the pros will depend upon the needs of the team that drafts him, but either way Kueber will be a dynamic addition to someone's lineup.

Looking Ahead to 2021
Ryan Lanchbury, RF, Burlington Chiefs Jr A & Richmond
Lanchbury is the kind of player you can't take your eyes off when he's on a lacrosse floor. He glides across the carpet with deceptive quickness, has brilliant vision and touch as a passer, and he can shoot the ball. Lanchbury could probably stand to shoot more but he has time to work on that side of his game before his draft night and two of his three seasons until then will be at the MSL level, so he'll have a chance to develop his game against men before he plies his trade at the professional level.

IL Indoor 10/22/19 - Stamper's Musings: Early 2020 NLL Mock Draft, Plus Who to Watch for '21 & '22
Ryan Lanchbury RF Burlington Chiefs Jr A & Richmond
Lanchbury had some injury issues this summer that limited him to seven games but he still scored 43 points, an average just over 6 per game. He is one of the three leading candidates (along with Jonathan Donville and Latrell Harris) to go first overall in a strong MSL draft.

IL Indoor 01/20/21 - Stamper's Musings: My Not Quite as Way Early as Usual Way Early NLL Mock Draft
2 Ryan Lanchbury, RF, Burlington Chiefs Jr A & Richmond
Lanchbury progressed steadily from 41 points in his 17-year-old season to 55, 71 and 88. In his final season of junior in 2019, Lanchbury missed substantial time to injury but did bump his average by a full point per game in the seven games he played, to 6.14. Watching him play can be mesmerizing because he is so smooth, but he's got grit, too. One of my favourite plays on the Lanchbury highlight reel came when Burlington was several goals ahead of the Lakers in Peterborough and he was running the point on a late third-period power play. A pass went awry and the ball rolled towards the restraining line with a Lakers defender immediately jumping into hot pursuit to create a potential breakaway. Lanchbury took a couple of quick steps then dove for the ball, reaching it at full extension and managing to swat it towards the boards to prevent the turnover. That kind of effort in a game that was well in hand speaks to the work ethic and competitive nature that makes him more than just a skill player. Whatever team is fortunate enough to draft him will love Lanchbury from Day 1. He may take a while to really hit his stride in the NLL if he doesn't get a season of MSL action in first, but he will be good for a long time.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 1 - 10
2 Ryan Lanchbury, RF, Oakville Rock MSL & Richmond
Pretty much everything in the comment on Jonathan Donville, below, applies to Lanchbury as well. Lanchbury scored 9 goals and 17 assists through his first four games with Oakville in MSL Classic this summer to just edge Donville to that point, then added a goal and 2 assists in his final game before heading back to Richmond for the extra year. I've been a big Lanchbury fan for years and was inclined to place him first in this list. Every single coach, GM and scout to whom I've spoken, though, has Donville first. When I follow up by asking about Lanchbury, to a person they say that he's very close and is also really good. It's a fine line. The edge to Donville may derive from his outstanding performance in leading Orangeville to the 2019 Minto Cup championship after he was traded there from Mimico. The Northmen beat Lanchbury's Burlington Chiefs in an Ontario final which included three overtime games that summer, so Lanchbury didn't get the chance to showcase himself at the Minto. Part of the reason is that Donville was definitely better in those playoffs. Because of that, I'll go with the flow and list Donville first, but Lanchbury is very close.

The fact that Lemieux is the 8th lefty forward in the top 24 prospects shows what a strong draft it is for the position. Lemieux is a big banger with enough skill to post back-to-back 20-goal seasons in the OJLL. He's not as quick as most of the other lefties who have appeared so far, but with his size he's able and willing to play a different role, working off ball and playing a gritty game. He suited up for the Armory in the Upstate Collegiate box league this summer, helping them to reach the national title game.

Linklater posted a 45-goal season as a 19-year-old with the SWAT in 2017. He hasn't matched that level of production since, but he fit in nicely at the 2018 World Junior Lacrosse Championship with a potent Canadian attack that included NLL draft picks Tanner Buck (2020) and Kyle Dawson (2019) plus likely first-rounder this year Thomas Vaesen. Linklater is comfortable playing a depth role, which can be valuable understanding for a player who will need to be able to do so in the NLL.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 1 - 10
6 Mike McCannell, LT, Oakville Rock MSL & Stony Brook
McCannell is a product of the Orangeville lacrosse factory, where he played (and won a Minto Cup) beside Zack Deaken, who is the leading contender to be the first defender taken in the 2022 NLL draft. Oakville took McCannell with the 4thpick in the MSL draft this year and Brooklin followed by taking Deaken; that gives you an idea of how highly the Rock regard McCannell. It's easy to see why. He's 6'2” and about 200 pounds with speed, skill and savvy. McCannell is also versatile: he won't be playing forward in the NLL but he can stay up for shifts and fill in if you're short on the left side. He played a full game on offence for Oakville this summer and looked just fine, scoring 2 goals and 2 assists and not looking at all out of place, the way many defenders can when forced to play up front.

Looking Ahead to 2021
Tehoka Nanticoke, RF, Six Nations Arrows Jr A & Albany
Nanticoke has drawn loads of attention with his sick skills, his almost unstoppable physicality and the fact that Albany had to have a special helmet fashioned to accommodate his remarkably large head. He's a special talent, for sure, but he does have potential competition to go first overall three years from now.

IL Indoor 10/22/19 - Stamper's Musings: Early 2020 NLL Mock Draft, Plus Who to Watch for '21 & '22
Tehoka Nanticoke RF Six Nations Chiefs & Albany
Nanticoke has awed observers with his breathtaking talent for years. In this summer's MSL playoffs and playing for the Iroquois Nationals at the 2019 WILC in Langley, he started to put it to use more consistently and combined with a drive that was sometime's the one thing lacking from his resume.

IL Indoor 01/20/21 - Stamper's Musings: My Not Quite as Way Early as Usual Way Early NLL Mock Draft
3 Tehoka Nanticoke, RF, Six Nations Arrows Jr A & Albany
If you haven't seen the insane goal that Nanticoke scored at the 2019 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship, go ahead and watch it before you keep reading. Here's the Link. That level of skill is why folks have been suggesting he'd be the first pick in the draft for years now. He's never put up monster numbers in Jr A, though. His top scoring season was 2016 when he had 24 goals and 33 assists for 57 points as an 18-year-old. He did finish 2019 strong, putting up 16 points in three round-robin games for the Iroquois Nationals at the WILC then scoring 5 goals and adding an assist in their two playoff contests. His skill set is unmistakeable, but a season of MSL would go a long way for him in showing he can consistently produce up to his potential.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 1 - 10
7 Tehoka Nanticoke, RF, Six Nations Chiefs MSL & Albany
[In the NCAA transfer portal but has not been picked up by a school to date]
Nanticoke is a polarizing figure in this draft. On sheer talent, he may well be higher on this list; his combination of size, strength and skill is rare. In a recent Six Nations Chiefs game, he twice hooked a defender with his right elbow as he spun underneath to drive to the crease, kept the defender on his back, protected his stick and tucked the ball home. One was called for a crease violation, but both plays were impressive and, importantly, something that Nanticoke will be able to repeat regularly. Then there's the goal he scored at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in Langley in 2019, for which I was fortunate enough to have a front-row seat calling play-by-play of the game. That's the level of skill he brings.
There are red flags, of course: he left Albany for a period early in his time with the Great Danes then was dismissed from the team this year. The fact that a player with his immense talent has not been picked up in the NCAA transfer portal raises further questions. NLL teams are divided: the consensus is that you will have to do your due diligence and determine if you believe Nanticoke can fit into your culture and have long-term success in the pros. He doesn't seem like a bad guy: even Albany spoke warmly of Nanticoke and made it clear that he was welcome to remain at the school to continue his education.
The numbers are mixed, as well. At the WILC, Nanticoke scored 16 points in three round-robin games then tallied 5 goals in two playoff matches. With the Jr A Six Nations Arrows in 2018, he scored 19 goals and 18 assists for 37 points in just seven games. But in his final year of junior, he scored 36 points in 12 games. In four MSL games that summer he scored 11 points and in four games so far this MSL Classic season he has 8 goals and 4 assists. Those totals are good, but they are nowhere near the production seen from the likes of Donville and Lanchbury. If Nanticoke's full potential can be unlocked consistently, he could wind up being the steal of the draft.

Phillips was a leader of the 2019 Shamrocks defence that allowed just 8.6 goals per game in its final five matches of the Minto Cup, three of which were against the powerhouse champion Orangeville Northmen (six players from that team were selected in last year's NLL draft, two are among the top nine this year and another could be a top 10 pick next year). He was potent in this summer's abbreviated BCJALL season, scoring 5 goals in Victoria's 10 games and adding 3 assists.

11 Kealan Pilon, LF, St. Catharines Athletics Jr A & Queen's (NC)
Pilon was part of a talented group that came up through the ranks together in St. Catharines and he led the Athletics in scoring in 2019 with 81 points. He lit it up at the World Juniors in Mississauga that summer, scoring 16 points in two round-robin games then posting 2 goals and 3 assists as Canada won the gold medal.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 11 - 20
20 Kealan Pilon, LF, Cobourg Kodiaks MSL, St. Catharines Athletics Jr A & Queen's (NC)
Pilon has been a key contributor to the Athletics core that has been together going back to minor and helped them win the OJLL title this summer. He was little snake-bitten, scoring only 4 goals in the nine games recorded on the league's stats pages, but his 15 assists was second on the team and he was always an important part of their success. Pilon has jumped into two games with Cobourg this summer and hit the ground running, scoring 3 goals and 7 assists. Is it a coincidence that the Kodiaks are 2-0 in the games he's played and 1-3 without him? Probably, but he has definitely been playing well against men in the small sample size we've gotten to see.

Piper played this summer with Mimico and didn't find a lot of success on the score sheet with the potent Mountaineers offence, producing just 4 goals and 12 assists. He does have a 57-assist, 76-point season on his resume with Whitby in 2019. He's a steady depth player who doesn't need to have the ball in his stick a lot.

Port Coquitlam is an emerging source for NLL talent. While Carson won't be drafted as early as his brother Ryland, who went 2nd overall to Rochester in 2019, he continues the Saints trend of increasing relevance in the prospect business. Carson scored 14 goals and 30 points in 10 games with PoCo in 2019 then added 12 points in four games after a trade to Langley.

Reid consistently scored about 3 points per game over his final four Jr A seasons, first with the Kitchener-Waterloo Braves and then his final year (2019) with the Arrows. He would be continue the Ohio State pipeline to the pros if he is able to crack an NLL roster. Reid's athletic potential led the Brampton Excelsiors to select him 15th overall in the 2020 MSL draft.

IL Indoor 04/27/20 - Stamper's Musings: Imagining the 2020 NLL Draft Without College Players
14 Halifax Thunderbirds (compensatory pick for Matt Vinc signing)
Kobe Robinson, Barrie Lakeshores and Paris RiverWolves
Robinson went to Olivet College in Michigan for one year in 2017/18 but didn't return last year, so he's eligible for this non-college-players draft. He'd be trying to follow the path of current Halifax Thunderbirds defender Colton Armstrong in making it to the NLL after playing primarily Jr C, although unlike Armstrong, Robinson did play one full season of Jr A lacrosse. Then again, that season was for the 0-20 Lakeshores in their final year before folding. Robinson played every game for the RiverWolves this season and improved steadily to the point where he was becoming a consistently reliable defender who didn't make too many mistakes.

Russel is described as a pitbull who will do whatever coaches ask of him, as well as a gym rat who is always working to learn and improve. He played two full seasons for the Shamrocks as well as all 10 games in this summer's pandemic-shortened schedule. The 20-year-old is available immediately after entering the draft a year ahead of his graduation from junior. He's a bit of a project but his energy and drive gives him the potential to develop into a long-term pro defender under the right tutelage.

Average 4 points per game through his junior career, contributing to a Coquitlam team that won Minto Cups in 2016 and '18. In his final season of 2019, Semple was named a BCJALL 2nd team all-star. Like many offensive players in this draft, he's a bit on the smaller side, but he's solid physically and has four years of being coached by Pat Coyle in Coquitlam, which is like taking Advanced Placement course in high school. He was selected 8th overall by the Sr A Adanacs in this year's WLA draft.

IL Indoor 09/12/20 - 2020 NLL Draft: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects — 11-20
^^14 Patrick Shoemay, RD, Burnaby Lakers/New Westminster Salmonbellies Jr A & RIT
^^[Editor's note: Shoemay might not be eligible for this draft. Because he took 2020 off of school while he recuperated from his knee surgery, it appears that Shoemay has only used three years of eligibility. While he is returning to RIT for another year, it is a different situation than players who are going back after using four years of eligibility. That could mean that he does not meet the COVID-19 criteria to be entered into this draft, but will go in next year instead. IL Indoor has not received confirmation from the NCAA or RIT's eligibility officer that this is the case, but it seems likely. We will update the story when further details become available.]

Shoemay is easily the most overlooked prospect in this draft. He was the BCJALL defender of the year in 2018, the final season he played. He combines good character and high lacrosse IQ with a tough, physical game supported by his 6-4, 210-pound size. He also brings an intriguing athletic pedigree; as a high school quarterback, Shoemay carries some football mentality and the complex play-processing ability that position demands. The issue that makes him a question mark is a knee injury that caused him to miss all of 2019. What I'm hearing is that he was ready to go for this summer's WLA season. Without that chance to show that he's fully healed and still the player he was, as well as how he can perform playing against men, Shoemay has a double whammy to overcome. He may be the player who could have used a summer season the most. As it stands now, someone may get a real steal if he does fall as far as this ranking suggests he might.

IL Indoor 01/20/21 - Stamper's Musings: My Not Quite as Way Early as Usual Way Early NLL Mock Draft
7 Patrick Shoemay, RD, New West Salmonbellies Jr A & RIT
Shoemay was considered a strong candidate to be taken in the first round last year before it became widely known that he still had a year of eligibility at RIT because of a redshirt season. The positives for Shoemay include his size (6'4”, 210 pounds) and ability (BCJALL defender of the year in 2018). The concern if there's no summer season is that he won't have played box lacrosse since that standout 2018 season. The extra year of not playing, because of a knee injury, makes it even harder to evaluate Shoemay than all the players missing a couple of years. Fortunately, he had already established his bona fides as a solid prospect.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 1 - 10
8 Patrick Shoemay, RD, New West Salmonbellies Jr A & RIT
Shoemay looked likely to be a high pick last year before news broke that he wasn't eligible for that draft. Now he's looking like a pretty surefire first rounder this year. So let's take a look at what I wrote about him leading up to the draft last year, because it all holds true.
“Shoemay is easily the most overlooked prospect in this draft. He was the BCJALL defender of the year in 2018, the final season he played. He combines good character and high lacrosse IQ with a tough, physical game supported by his 6-4, 210-pound size. He also brings an intriguing athletic pedigree; as a high school quarterback, Shoemay carries some football mentality and the complex play-processing ability that position demands.”
He's also had the opportunity to show he is fully recovered from a serious knee injury that was a bit of a lingering concern last year; Shoemay played a full season in helping his RIT Tigers win a national championship this spring.

IL Indoor 01/20/21 - Stamper's Musings: My Not Quite as Way Early as Usual Way Early NLL Mock Draft
12 Jerry Staats, LD, Six Nations Arrows & Syracuse
Staats is a rugged defender with four seasons in a growing leadership role with the Arrows. He won world field lacrosse championship bronze medals with the Iroquois Nationals at the 2016 U19 tournament and the 2018 senior tournament.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 21 - 30
30 Jerry Staats, LD, Six Nations Chiefs & Syracuse
Staats was higher on this lister before the summer, but he's looked a bit slow both physically and processing the game at the MSL level in his half dozen games with the Chiefs. He won a pair of Minto Cups with the Six Nations Arrows, the first as a young player working his way into the roster and the second as a key contributor. Staats is rugged and has strong lacrosse instincts, so this summer is likely just a blip in his development; he still projects as a solid depth defender at the pro level.

43 Skkylar Thomas, LF, Cobourg Kodiaks MSL, Peterborough Timbermen ALL & Onondaga CC
Thomas is small but skilled. He scored 96 points in two seasons with the Toronto Beaches in Jr A. He had sporadic success in the Arena Lacrosse League: Thomas posted 20 points in two of his six games (2g/8a in one, 10a in the other) and 11 in the other four. In three games in the MSL Classic with Cobourg this year, he's scored 4 goals and added a single assist. He has looked good at times playing against men, but definitely needs to add some strength and develop consistency; there are times when he is just too easy to play against. But at the times when his game is clicking, Thomas can look very dangerous in the offensive zone. If he can find a way to make that a more frequent occurrence, he's got a chance to makes waves at the highest levels of the game.

06/27/20 - Best in Box: U18 #bctour Top 25 - 5. Landon Trout (2016)
Prior to leaving for Vancouver, Resolute Co-Founder and Team USBOXLA coach, Greg Bice, told the rest of that summer’s staff that Landon Trout was the best box player his Columbus-based club had ever produced. After seeing Trout compete in five gruelling games in just seven days, everyone quickly found out that Bice wasn’t just blowing smoke. Trout was as advertised, maybe even better. The future OCBLL first overall pick and league’s first-ever MVP, Trout showed how creative, clever, composed, and offensively evolved an American forward playing box against top-level Canadians can be.

IL Indoor 01/20/21 - Stamper's Musings: My Not Quite as Way Early as Usual Way Early NLL Mock Draft
5 Thomas Vaesen, LF, Nanaimo Timbermen Jr A & Montevallo
Who do you take if you're looking for a lefty forward, Charalambides or Vaesen? The parallels wind up being interesting. Compare their first Jr A seasons, Charalambides when he was 20 and Vaesen when he was 19. Charalambides 17gp/35g/39a/74pts; Vaesen 20gp/37g/29a/66pts. Both missed out on the final season of their junior careers, Charalambides to a knee injury and Vaesen to the pandemic. But first, each was able to add one thing to their resume. Charalambides led the Orangeville Northmen to within a goal in one of the most exciting Minto Cup endings ever (they lost to Coquitlam in overtime of the deciding Game 5). He scored 86 points in 21 playoff games, including leading the Minto in scoring by a mile with 17g/16a/33pts. Vaesen doesn't have much of a playoff record, only getting 6 games with Nanaimo (7g/4a), but he did get another regular season and crushed it, leading the BCJALL with 53 goals and adding 47 assists for a nice round 100 points. With neither having played senior lacrosse and a season this summer unlikely to happen, this is a tough decision. As mentioned above, Charalambides will be 25 this year. Vaesen will be 22. An extra three years of a very talented player may just be enough to bump Vaesen ahead in many teams' rankings.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 1 - 10
4 Thomas Vaesen, LF, Nanaimo Timbermen Jr A & Montevallo
Vaesen seems to be overshadowed in this draft. To be fair, the three players above him on this list have been on the radar longer and have done nothing but live up to expectations. Vaesen, however, is a stud and shouldn't be overlooked. He's a great shooter, potting 53 goals as a 20-year-old in 2019. It hurst his stock that he hasn't had much opportunity to showcase his game in the playoffs as his Timbermen team missed the playoffs in his first season and were denied a berth in the Minto when the Coquitlam Adanacs beat them in six games in the BC semis in 2019. Vaesen hasn't had much of a chance to play box since, and he could have really used the exposure to develop and demonstrate his ability. The Langley Thunder saw what Vaesen brings to the table, protecting him in the first round of the Western Lacrosse Association draft this past February.

Kyle Waters RF Orangeville Northmen & Detroit Mercy
Big (6'4", 205 pounds), strong and talented, Waters had his second straight 42-goal season for the Northmen and has a year of junior eligibility remaining.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 1 - 10
9 Kyle Waters, RF, Brooklin Lacrosse Club MSL & Detroit Mercy
Waters is big and strong, and he is skilled enough to score 97 regular-season points and another 67 playoff points (each in 20 games) to help the Orangeville Northmen win the 2019 Minto Cup. He was traded to Brampton (Orangeville moved their 22-year-olds to focus on development of younger players) for the OJLL season this summer and has been playing regularly with Brooklin in the MSL Classic after they took him with the first overall pick last winter. He hasn't looked as sharp with either team as he did in his regular junior career; Waters scored 11 points in five games with the Excelsiors and has 2 goals and 7 assists in three games with BLC. The concern is that he's looked a bit slow this summer, both physically and processing the game. He should adjust as he gets more repetitions at the higher levels. What hasn't changed from junior is his ability and willingness to create space for his teammates; Waters and Donville worked very well together with Orangeville and it has been a common sight on Donville goals with BLC this summer to see Waters setting huge picks just before Donville shoots. He'll be a solid addition to a pro offence, even if it takes a while before his contributions are as visible on the score sheet as they are to his coaches.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 41 - 50
48 Connor Watson, LD, Niagara Thunderhawks Jr B, Paris RiverWolves ALL & Guelph
It's easy for players like Watson to fly under the radar. He hasn't played Jr A lacrosse, spending his entire junior career with the Jr B Niagara Thunderhawks; not getting his final two years to move up to the A level and showcase himself is the kind of damage the pandemic has done to so many young players. Watson did, however, get a chance to play 10 games with Paris before the Arena Lacrosse League season had to stop in 2020. He showed enough with his 7 goals and 14 assists, smart play and athleticism to make him worth taking a flyer on in the NLL draft. It's virtually impossible to project how he'll do when he gets to camp, and it's likely that he'll need more seasoning before he's ready for a real shot at making a team. That is the case for many players this year, though, and the challenge for pro GMs, coaches and scouts that makes the 2021 draft so unpredictable.

IL Indoor 01/25/21 - Stamper's Musings: More Players to Keep an Eye on for the 2021 NLL Draft
Keagan White, LD, Saskatchewan SWAT Jr A
White is a rugged defender who just missed my first round mock last week. He's part of a growing trend of Saskatchewan players who are legitimate contenders for NLL rosters as the SWAT program ramps up in Saskatoon. That trend probably actually started with Zach Gould. The Rush generally have taken a Saskatchewan player late in the draft to help support the province's minor through junior system. Mike Kaminski actually went in the fourth round in 2016 and I thought he had a decent chance to carve out a pro career, but so far it hasn't worked out. Gould was the very last pick in the 2018 draft, so he fit the mold of being selected by the Rush primarily because he was the best player available from the province.

But Gould quickly impressed Derek Keenan the rest of the Rush coaches at camp, to the point where he earned a spot on the practice squad and is a serious contender to snag an active roster spot, especially if Jeff Shattler doesn't return this season, as Shattler has suggested is a possibility. Gould is a talented lefty forward who has shown that he can play.

Last year, Laine Hruska became the first player who came all the way up through the Saskatchewan system to go in the first round (Casey Zaph was the first Saskatchewan-raised player to go in the first round, back in 1997, but he had to leave the province to get to that point). White may not go in the first round, but he's a serious player as well. He's a rugged and consistent defender, the kind of player a coach can just roll out every game and not worry about him making too many mistakes. It won't be just the Rush who take a serious look at him for this fall's draft.

IL Indoor 08/24/21 - NLL Draft 2021: Stamper's Top 50 Prospects - 11 - 20
15 Keagan White, LD, Saskatchewan SWAT Jr A
White also played this summer, although very little of his SWAT film is readily available. His coaches emphasize, though, that he was exactly what they'd come to expect from him: a reliable defensive presence who can play big minutes and remain effective, a tremendous leader and strong dressing room character. Whoever drafts White won't be looking for scoring—he had precisely one goal in his 32 Jr A games from 2017-19—but he provides the kind of defence that makes that easy to overlook.

Wilson is physical, athletic and cerebral. Like so many players who will be drafted this year, he's going back to school for the extra year of Covid-19 eligibility. Also like so many of these players, the chance to play senior lacrosse next summer (with the Sr Shamrocks, who took him in the second round of the WLA draft) will probably be a boon after not getting much of a chance to be on the floor since that 2019 season.

Yanko was third on the Bellies in scoring in his final Jr A season of 2019, behind NLL picks Will Malcom and Tre Leclaire, although the majority of his points came with Burnaby before being picked up by New West for the stretch run. Yanko had 45 goals and 74 points in total, then added 19 points in seven playoff games, including being second on the team in assists (only Leclaire, San Diego's 4th overall pick last year, had more). The Burnaby Lakers took him 13th overall in the 2020 Western Lacrosse Association draft.
