Game Notes

Last night at Ho-Chunk Nation Field at The Hive, the Minnesota Swarm were showing the 8,974 hometown fans a fine show, up 10-9 after three quarters. The issue is that your typical NLL game lasts four quarters which was good for the Colorado Mammoth as they outscored the Swarm 11-3 to finish the opener for both teams, 20-13. The 20-13 score was nearly the same score the Swarm lost to the Mammoth in the 2012 opener (20-14) for both teams in Denver. Shayne Jackson led the Swarm with three goals and four assists while Miles Thompson made his NLL and Swarm debut with three goals and one assist.

  • Jordan MacIntosh left the game in the fourth quarter after a taking some serious slashes to the thighs. MacIntosh won his 600th faceoff for the Swarm and now has 603.
  • Jackson has reached seven points three times in his career (career high) including in the 2013 playoff win against Toronto. A very good game by Jackson who will need a lot more of those type of games to keep the opposing defenses from just concentrating on Callum Crawford and Thompson.
  • Corbyn Tao has already had a better year than last year as he scored twice and won four of seven faceoffs as he replaced MacIntosh late in the game at the faceoff X.
  • Kiel Matisz reached the 100 pt mark in his career assisting on Thompson's first goal of the night in the first quarter.
  • Thompson could have had four goals but he had one challenged by Colorado which the referee overturned on review. Even with his three goals in his NLL and Swarm debut, Thompson is still beat by Dean Hill who had four in his NLL and Swarm debut on April 9, 2006 at The Hive against San Jose.
  • Thompson, Sam Bradman and Shane MacDonald made their NLL and Swarm debuts.
  • Ethan O'Connor and Brodie MacDonald made their Swarm debuts.
  • The attendance for the opener increased from 8,213 in 2014 to 8,974 in 2015, an increase of 761.
  • The Mammoth have won 7 of 9 against the Swarm and four straight.
  • The Swarm are 5-6 in home openers and 3-8 in season openers. They have lost six straight season openers dating back to 2009.
  • The goals late in the game came often as the Mammoth got behind the Swarm defense on transition ending up one on one with Brodie MacDonald. It is interesting to note that MacDonald was kept in for the entire game. Swarm Head Coach Joe Sullivan has been known to have the quick hook during his tenure but I think he wanted to see how MacDonald reacted during the game and is looking forward to see how MacDonald adjusts going into the next, possibly next Saturday against his former team, the Edmonton Rush.
  • Former Swarm Sean Pollock had three goals (all in the 4th) and three assists. With those numbers on Saturday night, Pollock reached 200 goals, 300 assists and 500 points in his career.
  • The eleven goals given up by the Swarm in the fourth quarter tied for the most in team history in the fourth quarter and any quarter. The first time came in Philadelphia on February 22, 2008 when the Wings outscored the Swarm 11-1 after trailing 7-6 going into the fourth quarter. Very similar to Saturday's game when the Swarm also led by one after three quarters.
  • The fifteen second half goals given up the Swarm were the most ever given up in the any half of Swarm regular season lacrosse.
  • The first quarter shutout by the Swarm of the Mammoth was the seventh time in team history that happenend.
  • The Swarm gave up their 2,000 regular season on the Mammoth's fifth goal of the night by Creighton Reid at the end of the second quarter. After the game, the Swarm have given 2,015 in their history.
  • The four shorthanded goals scored by the Mammoth tie a Swarm record for most given up in a game. It happened once before in Calgary in a 15-14 loss on January 27, 2007.
  • The fight between Andrew Suitor and Creighton Reid started after Suitor and Mammoth goaltender Dillon Ward exchanged words in Ward's crease. This was behind the play after Ward outletted the ball after a save. Reid moved in take up the cause and both Suitor and Reid fought a good fight along the board to the left of Ward. Suitor finally got the best of Reid but considering the Mammoth were up six late in the fourth, the fight was largely inconsequential.
  • Crawford was called twice for being in the crease on dive shots and had Sullivan throw the yellow flag to challenge. The first was in the second quarter and Crew Chief Shawn Grenier overturned the call on replay to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Swarm. The second Crawford challenge came in the third quarter but this time Grenier probably didn't see conclusive evidence to overturn leaving the score 9-7 in favor of the Swarm. That cost the Swarm a time out and if they would have won that challenge, they would have earned a third challenge that they could have use to possibly overturn a non-goal called on Miles Thompson in the fourth when the Swarm were down 12-10.
