The two teams met once last year in Febraury at The Hive with the Rush winning 14-9. The Rush got up early and kept control throughout the game as Jeremy Thompson had a hat trick for the Rush. Tyler Carlson started in net for the Swarm but was relieved by Zach Higgins in the third quarter. Callum Crawford had two goals and six assists while Jordan MacIntosh had three goals and an assist. Edmonton has won two straight in the series both at The Hive. Three of the eleven games in the series have went into overtime. The two teams met in the 2012 West Finals at The Hive with the Rush winning 15-3 to advance to the Champions Cup which they lost to the Rochester Knighthawks. The two teams will meet later this season on April 25th at The Hive.
Last Weekend:
The Swarm started their season at The Hive last weekend and held a 10-9 lead into the fourth quarter but the Colorado Mammoth erupted for eleven in the fourth to reach the twenty mark in a 20-13 victory. Shayne Jackson had three goals and four assists and Miles Thompson had three goals and one assist. Brodie MacDonald played the entire game in net for the Swarm stopping 37 of 56 shots.
The Rush opened their season in Buffalo against the Bandits. They rallied late but fell 9-8 as former Swarm Ryan Benesch riddled the Rush with five goals. 2014 NLL first-overall pick Ben McIntosh had a hat trick and Aaron Bold saved 31 of 40 shots.
Notes:
- 01/10/15 - Logan Schuss was activated from the hold out list and will play tonight. Shane MacDonald was placed on the physically unable to perform list due to illness.
- Jordan MacIntosh leads the NLL with 20 loose balls scooped.
- There will be a Thompson Brothers match up this weekend as Miles of the Swarm takes on older brother Jeremy of the Rush.
- Shayne Jackson has started the season quite well with seven points. It took until his fifth game last year to reach seven points on the season and it looks like he has no intention of repeating that.
- B. MacDonald will make his return to Edmonton where he spent the past three seasons as a backup to Bold. I expect Head Coach Joe Sullivan will give MacDonald the start and see how/if he rebounds from the last game. After this game, Sullivan will have two weeks to mull over who will start game three of the season in New England on January 24th.
- The Swarm are the only team in the league to not have power play goal. The four shorthanded goals they have given up is one more than the rest of the league combined. Special teams like Callum Crawford said after the game are a priority for improvement.
- The Rush were the league's best defense last year and only gave up nine in their loss led by three-time NLL Defensive Player of the Year Kyle Rubisch
- This is Edmonton's home opener. Last year, the Rush won their first fourteen games of the year and finished 16-2. The lost in the West Finals tiebreaker to the Calgary Roughnecks.
- Former Rush with the Swarm: Brodie MacDonald, Callum Crawford and Dean Hill
- Former Swarm with the Rush: Tyler Carlson, Nik Bilic and Zack Greer
- The July 1, 2014 trade between the teams saw them switch goaltenders and first round picks. Carlson and the Swarm's 2014 first rounder (1st overall - McIntosh) go to Edmonton for B. MacDonald and the Rush's 2014 first rounder (3rd overall - M. Thompson). The draftees Thompson and McIntosh each had three goals last weekend in their NLL debuts.
- Rush Head Coach & General Manager Derek Keenan has taken the season off to care for his wife, who just passed away on January 3rd. Assistants Jeff McComb and Jimmy Quinlan will share the on-floor duties.
Prediction: Minnesota Swarm 10 Edmonton Rush 9
