The Minnesota Swarm completed the following trades related to the 2014 NLL Entry Draft:

  • 09/22/2014 - MINNESOTA SWARM: trade Jay Card to the New England Black Wolves for the 40th pick in the 2014 NLL Entry Draft
  • 07/01/2014 - The Swarm trade G Tyler Carlson, the first overall pick in the 2014 NLL Entry Draft and the Swarm's second round pick in the 2015 NLL Entry Draft to the Edmonton Rush for G Brodie MacDonald and the third overall pick (originally Philadelphia) in the 2014 NLL Entry Draft.
  • 06/30/2014 - PHILADELPHIA WINGS - were rewarded by the NLL, the 20th pick in the 3rd round of the 2014 NLL Entry Draft from the Minnesota Swarm due to the Swarm tampering with Wings 2013 draftee AJ Masson
  • 01/23/2014 - The Swarm trade a fourth round pick (originally belonging to Edmonton) in the 2014 NLL Entry Draft to the Edmonton Rush for F Dane Stevens.
  • 09/16/2013 - EDMONTON RUSH: have traded the 42nd overall selection in the 2013 Entry Draft and fourth round selection in the 2014 Entry Draft to the Minnesota Swarm in exchange for the 30th overall selection in the 2013 Entry Draft.
  • 09/16/2013 - MINNESOTA SWARM: have traded their sixth round selection in the 2014 Entry Draft to the Edmonton Rush in exchange for the 52nd overall selection in the 2013 Entry Draft.
  • 02/17/2012 - The Swarm trade G Anthony Cosmo to the Buffalo Bandits for a first round pick in the 2013 & 2014 NLL Entry Drafts.

The Minnesota Swarm had five picks in the 2014 NLL Entry Draft but by the end of the night they added another pick by trading away Jay Card to the New England Black Wolves. Many thought that the Swarm would target Jeremy Noble to pair him with his brother Jason Noble but the Rochester Knighthawks made a blockbuster trade earlier in the day to move up to second overall to take Noble. Now the Swarm had to go with Plan B or did they really get the man the wanted to begin with.

With their third pick of the first round, the Minnesota Swarm took forward Miles Thompson from Onondaga, New York. Thompson is well known in lacrosse circles where he was named the co-winner of the 2014 Tewaaraton Tropy with his brother Lyle (draft eligible next year) while playing for the University of Albany. Thompson played for the Rochester Rattlers of the MLL where he helped lead them to finals before losing to the Denver Outlaws. He also won a bronze medal for the Iroquois Nationals at the 2014 World Field Lacrosse Championships in July. But Thompson finished the summer as a champion as his Onondaga Redhawks won the 2014 Presidents Cup, the Canadian Senior B championship. Thompson will be relied upon to immediately help Callum Crawford on the right side of the offense.

With their fifth overall pick in the draft, the Swarm selected lefty forward Shane MacDonald from Elora, Ontario. MacDonald just finished a very solid career with the Brampton Excelsiors and with Josh Gillam going to be out for the 2015 season with a knee injury, MacDonald will be needed to step up immediately on the left side.

With the first pick of the second round, tenth overall, the Minnesota Swarm took lefty forward Joe Haodais Maracle from Six Nations. Maracle was born in 1994 making him the youngest player on the team. In addition because of his age, he had to declare early for this year's draft similar to Andrew Suitor for the 2010 NLL Entry Draft. Even though he is young, Maracle already has two years of pro ball under his belt in CLAX the past two seasons where he measured up rather well. Maracle just finished up the summer winning the Canadian Junior A Championship, the Minto Cup, with the Six Nations Arrows. He has also won two Founders Cup, Canadian Junior B Championships, with the Six Nations Rebels. Maracle will be battling with MacDoanld for playing time on the left side.

During the draft, there was a lot of activity in the first three rounds with many trades, teams moving up and down the draft board but the Swarm stayed patient and waited out the flurry. When they finally got to their next pick it was the beginning of the fourth round. So to open the fourth with the pick #29, the Minnesota Swarm took London, Ontario native Eric Guiltinan. Guiltinan is a lefthanded transition player who played the last two seasons with the Kitchener-Waterloo Braves of the OLA Jr A. During the last few autumns including this year, Guiltinan plays running back in college for the Wilfrid Laurier University football team, so expect Guiltinan to not shy away from contact.

From the Bible of Lacrosse:

In the fifth round, pick #38, the Minnesota Swarm went with defense with righty Patrick Miles. Miles just finished his first season of Senior lacrosse with the Oakville Rock of the MSL. He was teammates with Noble, and Alex Crepinsek at Oakville. During his junior career, he was teammmates with MacDonald on the Brampton junior A teams in 2012 and 2013.

After taking Miles, the Swarm made their first and only draft day trade sending Jay Card to the New England Black Wolves, formerly the Philadephia Wings. Card was drafted by the Swarm in 2011 and played for the team in 2012 and 2013. Card played 31 regular season games with 24 goals and 26 assists and in four playoff games, Card had four goals and four assists. Card took the 2014 season off and became forgotten and expendable with the drafting of Thompson.

The Swarm in return got the 40th pick in this draft and took Peterborough, Ontario defenseman Paxton Leroux. Leroux played the last four years for the junior Lakers under former Swarm player Mat Giles. Leroux is known for his skills as a fighter as he averaged over ten penalty minutes per game in his junior A career. He also is still pursuing a pro hockey career where he also is skilled with his fists as he trys out for the London Knights in Ontario. It looks like hockey takes priority right now and if successful, it may be a while before we see him dress for the Swarm.
